Devata

Vāyu (with Indra-Vāyu as associated dyad in the hymn)

Chandas

Jagatī (probable for RV 1.135; verse shows extended cadence typical of Jagatī)

Inside Sukta 135

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

The hymn opens with ritual readiness: the barhis is spread and Vāyu is urgently invited to the feast, harnessed with countless yokes and entitled to the first draught.

  2. Development

Soma is described as honeyed and ecstasy-giving, set forth for kratu; the imagery shifts to the bright streams borne by priests, running swiftly and passing beyond the filter toward the god.

  3. Climax

Vāyu’s powers are proclaimed bull-like and ever-increasing, moving through river and waste alike—like the Sun’s rays, impossible to restrain—signaling unstoppable divine impetus entering the rite.

  4. Where it settles

The hymn settles into assurance of Vāyu’s approach and reception of the clarified Soma, leaving the sacrificer aligned with speed, vigor, and awakened will.

The deity: Vāyu

  • In the VedaVāyu is invoked as the swift, harness-yoked god who comes first to the Soma, moving with many yokes and irresistible speed; in the Indra-Vāyu pairing he is the immediate carrier of exhilaration, bringing the gods to the pressing and receiving the earliest draught.
  • Cosmic functionAs Wind/Breath, Vāyu governs motion, circulation, and the life-current that animates beings; he mediates between realms by carrying offerings, sounds, and vital force, and by quickening the sacrificial exchange.
  • Inner significanceVāyu signifies prāṇa—the energizing breath and the momentum of consciousness; his ‘first-drinking’ represents the primacy of vital force in awakening clarity, enthusiasm, and effective intention (kratu) before higher powers act.

The seer

  • Gautama RāhūgaṇaGautama gotra; Rāhūgaṇa lineage (traditional Anukramaṇī attribution) · A Gautama-seer credited in the Anukramaṇī with hymns that emphasize precise Soma-ritual imagery and the swift, first-invoked approach of Vāyu (often alongside Indra) to the early pressing.
