Bharata in Kaikeyi’s apartments: revelation of Daśaratha’s death and Rāma’s exile
na brāhmaṇadhanaṁ kiñcid dhṛtaṁ rāmeṇa kasyacit |
kaścin nāḍhyo daridro vā tenāpāpo vihiṁsitaḥ |
na rāmaḥ paradārāṁś ca cakṣurbhyām api paśyati ||48||
Rama did not rob any brahmin of even a little wealth nor did he harm any innocent man, whether rich or poor. He never casts his eyes on another's wife.
Dharma is shown through restraint: non-appropriation (asteya), non-violence toward the innocent, and sexual/moral propriety regarding others’ spouses.
Kaikeyī answers Bharata’s suspicion by affirming Rāma’s spotless conduct—implying exile was not due to any moral crime.
Rāma’s self-control, harmlessness, and adherence to social-ethical boundaries (maryādā).
