Sukta 9.96
यथापवथा मनवे वयोधा अमित्रहा वरिवोविद्धविष्मान् । एवा पवस्व द्रविणं दधान इन्द्रे सं तिष्ठ जनयायुधानि ॥
yáthā apávathāḥ mánave vayó-dhā amitra-hā́ varivo-víd dhavíṣmān | evā́ pavasva dráviṇaṃ dádhāna índre sáṃ tiṣṭha janáyāyudhāni ||
Soma, as once he purified for Manu—bestowing sustenance and plenitudes, slaying enemies, knowing the wide space, rich in oblation—so now let him purify, bearing treasure; let him gather in Indra and generate weapons for victory.
The delight-force (Soma) is invoked to clarify and refine consciousness as it did for the archetypal human (Manu), establishing the right human formation capable of the inner sacrifice. As it becomes ‘amitrahā’ it destroys hostile movements (doubt, inertia, desire, obscurity). ‘Varivovit’ is the discovering of the wide inner room—vastness and freedom in the being—where the psychic and spiritual life can breathe. ‘Standing in Indra’ means Soma is to be stabilized in the illumined mind; from that union arise the ‘āyudhāni’—effective powers (disciplines, discernments, luminous energies) that conquer the Coverer and recover the rays of knowledge.
When inner joy is purified and joined to clear intelligence, it becomes a force that opens inner space, dissolves hostile patterns, and generates practical powers for truthful living and victorious progress.
Archetypal precedent (Manu), Inner enemy-slaying, Generation of powers (āyudha), Soma-Indra synergy
The anonymity reflects the collective seer-vision of the Soma book: the emphasis is on a repeatable inner process (purification of delight into power) rather than a personal revelation.
Soma is the clarifying current that carries the offering upward and brings down strength and joy; in conjunction with Indra it becomes the dynamis for victory over obstruction.
Ananda refined into luminous force; bliss that becomes effective will and victorious energy when held in Indra (illumined mind).
Soma pressing and purification (pavamāna) in Soma-yajña

Triṣṭubh (probable for RV 9.96; many verses in this hymn are Triṣṭubh)
44
4 pādas of ~11 syllables
Forward-driving, martial-clarifying cadence suited to ‘victory’ formulations.
Builds gathering force; supports concentration and resolve, culminating in a sense of inner armament and readiness.
Links Soma’s earlier aid to Manu with present rite; asks Soma to integrate with Indra and produce ‘weapons’ (powers) for victory
During the flowing/straining of Soma through the filter into vessels, especially in sequences addressed to Pavamāna.
Chant while Soma is strained; invite Soma to unite with Indra and empower the rite.
Use as a mantra of inner purification before meditation: ‘clarify the delight, widen the inner space, generate powers for truth’.
manu from PIE *manu- ‘man, human’ (cf. German Mann). amitra ‘non-friend/hostile’ a- + mitra; mitra from √mi ‘bind’ (friend as bond). āyudha from ā- + √yudh ‘fight’ (PIE *yeudh- ‘battle’; cf. Germanic *geud- debated). draviṇa ‘wealth’ from √dru/drav ‘run/flow’ or related semantic of ‘substance’—here read as stable treasure of attainment.
Manu as archetype of humanity’s path, varivas (wideness) as liberation, integration in Indra (sam tiṣṭha)
Purification aligns Soma with Ṛta, making the inner energies orderly and victorious.
‘Weapons’ are powers that enforce satya in thought, speech, and action.
From purified essence arises power—an inner cosmogony where delight becomes formative force.
Proto-Vedāntic / Integral-psychological reading (Aurobindonian): ascent of offering and descent of force through purified Ananda.
Flow = movement of consciousness; filtration = discrimination and refinement; wide room = inner vastness; treasure = realizations; weapons = yogic powers for overcoming resistance.
Refine delight into steady luminous force; invoke union of Ananda (Soma) with illumination (Indra) to generate effective inner faculties.
Anāhata to Ājñā (joy rising into illumined mind)
Moderate nāḍī-śodhana or slow ujjāyī while repeating ‘pavasva… indre saṃ tiṣṭha’.
Collected, expansive, victorious clarity.
Begin with felt gratitude/joy, then ‘filter’ it through discernment; hold it in the clear mind; ask for specific ‘weapons’: steadiness, discrimination, courage, truth-speaking.
Use the pada text to preserve udatta/anudatta/svarita; key lifts often fall on vocatives/imperatives like ‘pavasva’, and on emphatic compounds (traditional accenting applies).
Keep compounds clean: amitrahā, varivovit, haviṣmān; do not flatten ‘indre saṃ tiṣṭha’—give a slight lift on Indre per recitation tradition.
yathā—clear long ā, apavathāḥ—retain aspirate ‘thāḥ’, varivo-vit—distinct v and short i in vit, draviṇam—retroflex ṇ, āyudhāni—long ā, soft dh
Bright, steady, slightly forceful (victory tone)
