All these guiding leadings and hidden words I have fashioned for thee, O Agni, who knowest—O disposer. Secret utterances and poetic truths for the seer; with thoughts and inspired hymns I have proclaimed them.
The rishi describes mantra as ‘nīthāni’—leadings, pathways of guidance—crafted for Agni who already knows (viduṣe) because Agni is the inner knower and arranger (vedhaḥ) of the sacrifice. The words are ‘niṇyā’ and ‘nivacanā’: hidden/secret, not for surface hearing but for inner disclosure. They are ‘kāvyāni’—poetic truth-formulations—meant for the ‘kavi’, the seer-consciousness in us. With mati (luminous thought) and uktha (inspired utterance), the vipra (inspired mind) proclaims what is inwardly seen. This is a self-referential Vedic insight: mantra is a technology of revelation, addressed to the divine Fire that both receives and deciphers it within.
The deepest truths are communicated in symbols and rhythms that awaken the seer within; when offered to the inner knower, hidden guidance becomes living knowledge.
poetic self-awareness, secret speech, Agni as knower, mantric revelation
The Vāmadeva corpus is especially reflective about mantra itself—its secrecy (niṇyā), its guidance (nītha), and its power to awaken the kavi-consciousness.
This is a meta-mantra: it reveals the rishi’s method—hidden speech offered to the inner knower so that guidance becomes operative in the being.
Bearer of mantric truth; organizer of the sacrifice; revealer who turns hidden word into effective guidance.
Inner hermeneutic fire: the capacity in consciousness that understands symbols, digests mantra, and arranges progress.
Recitation accompanying composition/recitation of hymns to Agni; affirmation that the formulas are crafted and offered rightly.

Reflective yet strong; alternates between ‘hidden’ terms and proclamatory cadence.
Encourages inward listening; the rhythm suggests unveiling—moving from secrecy to proclamation.
Self-referential closure/affirmation of inspired composition: offering secret and guided speech to Agni as knower and ordainer
At the close of a hymn-sequence or when presenting composed uktha/brahman to the fire.
Offering of speech as oblation; acknowledgment of Agni as knower and arranger.
Use as a mantra before scriptural study or inner inquiry: ‘may hidden guidance be revealed to the seer within through the inner fire.’
√vidh ‘to arrange, apportion, worship’ → vedhaḥ ‘disposer/ordainer’. nītha ‘leading’ relates to √nī ‘to lead’ with suffix -tha. niṇya ‘hidden’ (from ni-√nī/√nī?; traditional ‘secret’) marks esoteric inward speech. kavi (seer) is archaic IE poetic term (cf. Avestan kavi). uktha from √vac/√ukth (solemn utterance) indicates liturgical poetry as power.
revelation through speech (vāc), kavi-consciousness, inner guidance (nītha)
Nīthāni implies guidance along Ṛta’s pathways; Agni as vedhaḥ maintains order of progress.
Kāvyāni as truth-poems: beauty and truth are united; satya is carried by right word.
Manifestation through word and fire; the hidden becomes expressed and effective.
Hermeneutic mysticism of the Veda (Aurobindo/Kashyap): mantra as symbolic revelation of psychological processes.
Fire = inner knower; hidden space = subconscious/inner chamber where mantra works; pathways = channels of progress in consciousness.
Inward hearing (śravaṇa) of mantra: let the words sink beneath surface meaning and listen for ‘nītha’—a subtle directive arising from within.
Ājñā (inner seeing/meaning) and Viśuddha (subtle speech).
Bhrāmarī-light or silent humming after chanting to deepen inner audition; then quiet nasal breathing 10 cycles.
Introvertive clarity; intuitive receptivity.
Chant once slowly, then sit in silence asking: ‘What is the hidden guidance (nītha) today?’ Note one clear, simple directive that arises without mental strain.
Rigvedic accents; treat ‘niṇyā’ and ‘nivacanā’ with careful articulation—these are semantic pivots and should be audibly distinct.
Sustain a contemplative line; avoid speeding through compounds; let the second pāda breathe after ‘niṇyā vacāṃsi’.
nīthāni: long ī and ā; dental th (not retroflex), niṇyā: retroflex ṇ; palatal ny cluster, nivacanā: clear ‘va’ and long ā at end, kavaye: short a; ‘v’ not ‘w’, kāvyāni: long ā; ‘vy’ cluster clean, aśaṃsiṣam: nasal ‘ṃ’; ṣṣ articulation, matibhir: dental t; bh aspirated, ukthaiḥ: ‘kh’ aspirated; final ḥ audible
Soft, inward, resonant; prioritize clarity over volume.
