Inside Sukta 97

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

The hymn begins by praising the plants as primordial and divinely empowered, recalling their many ‘stations’ and capacities.

  2. Development

It moves from praise to direct therapeutic command: the plants are asked to spread through the body, joint by joint, and to drive out yakṣma and other afflictions with decisive force.

  3. Climax

The peak is the vivid healing action—plants ‘creeping/spreading’ through the body and forcibly expelling disease, like a wedge splitting what is lodged within.

  4. Where it settles

It ends by elevating the Oṣadhi as ‘most excellent’ and seeking lasting shelter and protection—healing that becomes a guard against future harm and hostile attack.

The deity: Oṣadhīs

  • In the VedaThe hymn addresses plants as ancient, god-born/god-prior powers with many ‘stations’ (dhāmāni), capable of entering the body joint by joint and driving out disease. They are praised as protective coverings and supports, and as active agents that ‘scatter’ afflictions.
  • Cosmic functionTo mediate life, restoration, and continuity by transforming earth’s generative vitality into curative potency; they serve as a divine interface between the natural world and human well-being.
  • Inner significanceThe Oṣadhīs symbolize the healing intelligence within nature and within the person—restorative forces that spread through one’s ‘limbs and joints’ as renewed coherence, resilience, and protection from destructive influences.

The seer

  • Bhiṣaj (healer-seer), traditionally associated with the Oṣadhi-hymn corpus; specific individual rishi uncertain in the Saṃhitā traditionPreserving a Vedic medical-poetic tradition in which plants are addressed as living, divine agencies of cure and protection; this hymn is among the most explicit Rigvedic celebrations of pharmacological healing.

Attributes of the deity

  • Primordial/ancient (pūrvā jātāḥ)
  • Many-formed and manifold in powers (numerous dhāmāni)
  • Pervasive, entering limb-by-limb (aṅgam-aṅgam)
  • Disease-expelling, especially against yakṣma
  • Protective and sheltering (upastayaḥ)
  • Both collective (plural) and archetypal (singular ‘supreme’ Oṣadhi)

Also by this seer

  • RV 10.97 (Oṣadhī-sūkta) is the principal attribution in this style; the rishi-name is not consistently fixed across recensions
  • Closely aligned in theme with late Rigvedic/early Atharvavedic healing and protective hymns (bhaiṣajya, rakṣā), though not strictly attributed as the same author

The rite, step by step

  • Prepare a clean space and (optionally) a small fire or lamp; establish intention for healing/protection.
  • Invoke the Oṣadhīs collectively, acknowledging their antiquity and manifold powers (recite opening verses).
  • Consecrate the medicine: touch or hold herbs/water/ointment while reciting verses that ‘send’ the plants through the body (aṅgam-aṅgam).
  • Apply/administer the remedy (drink, anoint, fumigate, or place as a poultice) while reciting disease-expelling mantras (yakṣma-nāśana).
  • Conclude with protective verses asking the plants to be a ‘covering/support’ against hostility and injury; offer thanks and dismissal (visarjana) of the invoked powers.

Offerings

  • Medicinal herbs (identified locally to the ailment)
  • Water infused with herbs (āpo + oṣadhi)
  • Ghee or clarified butter (if using a fire/offering)
  • Barley/rice or simple oblations as available (optional, context-dependent)

Frequently Asked Questions

Oṣadhīs are medicinal plants addressed as a collective divine power. The hymn treats them as living healers whose energies can enter the body and restore health.

Yakṣma is an affliction often understood as wasting disease or deep-seated illness. The hymn asks the plants to forcefully remove it from the person, joint by joint and limb by limb.

It is used in healing and protective contexts—while preparing or administering herbal remedies, consecrating medicinal water, or performing a simple domestic rite seeking recovery and safeguarding from harm.
