Mantra 2

Mantra 3

Mantra 5

Mantra 7

Inside Sukta 152

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

Mitra–Varuṇa are praised as richly arrayed powers whose thought-currents are ‘unbroken,’ moving together by ṛta beyond all falsehood.

  2. Development

The hymn advances through paradox and cosmic riddle: unseen forces precede the seen; the ‘embryo’ bears the world’s burden, filling out ṛta and subduing anṛta.

  3. Climax

The revelation that an unseen, wombed principle sustains order—truth is not merely spoken but structurally carried by the cosmos, under Mitra–Varuṇa’s governance.

  4. Where it settles

The prayer turns toward nourishment and inspired knowing: the poet is aided, filled, and then asks for vayunāni, ending in a gesture of widening protection in Aditi’s wholeness.

The deity: Mitra-Varuṇa

  • In the VedaA paired sovereignty: Mitra embodies concord, alliance, and the binding force of truthful relation; Varuṇa embodies vastness, moral-cosmic oversight, and the binding of transgression through his ordinances. Together they are invoked as moving ‘by ṛta’ in unified accord, sustaining truth and exposing falsehood.
  • Cosmic functionThey uphold ṛta—stability of seasons, social contracts, and moral law—maintaining the world’s coherence and restraining anṛta through oversight, binding, and restoration.
  • Inner significanceThe integrated conscience: clarity and harmony (Mitra) joined with deep moral awareness and self-regulation (Varuṇa). In practice, they signify the mind’s capacity to align thought, speech, and action with truth, moving beyond inner falsehood and fragmentation.

The seer

  • MāmateyaTraditionally connected with the Māmateya/Dirghatamas-related poetic lineage in the early Maṇḍala 1 hymn cluster (exact gotra attribution uncertain) · A rishi-name associated with riddling, paradox-rich diction and insight into ṛta/anṛta polarity, often expressing cosmic order through enigmatic images

Attributes of the deity

  • Guardians of ṛta (cosmic and moral order)
  • Dual sovereignty: harmony (Mitra) + oversight/binding (Varuṇa)
  • Truth-discerning and falsehood-overcoming
  • Protectors of vows, contracts, and right conduct
  • All-seeing, far-ranging governance
  • Bestowers of insight (vayunāni) and well-being

Also by this seer

  • Traditionally linked by adjacent-hymn attribution patterns within RV Maṇḍala 1 (clustered seer attributions)
  • Associated in later tradition with the Māmateya stream of esoteric, riddle-like Vedic poetry (exact corpus boundaries vary by recension and anukramaṇī tradition)

The rite, step by step

  • Establish the sacred fire (Agni) and seat the intention: alignment with ṛta and truthful speech.
  • Invite Mitra–Varuṇa with paired invocation, acknowledging their unified movement in ṛta.
  • Recite the hymn steadily (Triṣṭubh cadence), contemplating the riddle-images as signs of hidden order.
  • Offer oblations while requesting freedom from anṛta and the gift of vayunāni (right discriminations).
  • Conclude with a protective prayer oriented to Aditi-like wholeness (unboundedness, integrity).

Offerings

  • Ghee (ājya) into Agni
  • Soma libations where applicable
  • Milk/curds as nourishing offerings (suggested by the ‘cows/udder’ imagery)
  • Simple water libation and truthful vow (satya-saṅkalpa) as an ethical offering

Frequently Asked Questions

They are a paired deity of sovereignty: Mitra represents harmony and right relationship, while Varuṇa represents vast moral-cosmic oversight. Together they uphold ṛta (truthful order).

Ṛta is the right pattern—cosmic order, truth, and lawful harmony. Anṛta is its opposite: falsehood, disorder, and what breaks alignment in thought, speech, and action.

It is a Vedic riddle pointing to unseen forces that precede visible movement and growth—an inner or hidden principle that carries the world’s burden, strengthens ṛta, and pushes down anṛta.
