Born in a noble race, O Sita, you are always devoted to duty. Follow your duty, here. It will make me happy.
Dharma is invoked through svadharma and kuladharma; peace of mind is sought through right role-based conduct.
Practice of svadharma as daily sādhana: steadiness, role-clarity, and restraint in emotionally charged decisions.
Svadharma as one’s ordained role (adhikāra) aligning action with inner steadiness (citta-śānti).
Bṛhadāraṇyaka/Chāndogya emphasis on dharma and satya as sustaining order; peace (śānti) as fruit of right conduct.
Bhagavad Gītā 3.35 (śreyān svadharmo...); Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa 2.27 (Sītā’s counter-argument: her dharma is to follow)
Dharmaśāstra notions of strī-dharma and kuladharma
Ayodhyākāṇḍa: repeated ‘svadharma’ framing in family counsel scenes
Anuṣṭup (śloka)
Commanding (gentle injunction)
Madhyama with clear udatta on ‘dharme’ and ‘svadharmam’
The verse emphasizes svadharma—fulfilling one’s rightful duty according to one’s role and situation—as a stabilizing force that preserves righteousness and inner peace.
Rāma addresses Sītā in Ayodhyā, urging her to remain behind rather than accompany him into forest exile, framing his counsel in terms of dharma.
Rāma’s prudence and protective responsibility (maryādā) are highlighted, as he appeals to Sītā’s devotion to dharma while seeking her welfare and his own peace of mind.
