Sukta 36

Rishi: Attributed in AV 20 largely to Ṛgvedic seers for Indra hymns (RV provenance); specific r̥ṣi for this verse follows the RV hymn-source attribution.

Devata: Indra

Chandas: Triṣṭubh (RV-style; AV 20 is predominantly RV meters)

Inside Sukta 36

How it unfolds

  1. How it opens

Indra is hailed as the sole truly ‘havya’ (fit for offering) among men, worthy of direct praise with hymns (20.36.1).

  2. What it asks

That Indra, the bull of might, grant patronal strength and victory, and actively break apart stubborn, compacted strongholds and obstacles (20.36.6).

  3. Where its power lies

Indra’s might is portrayed as self-strong and mountain-like, thought-swift and effective even against the unshaken and well-fortified—therefore the hymn’s petition is inherently realizable through his nature.

  4. How it closes

A final urgent invitation: Indra is asked to come quickly with yoked teams and all boons—helps that neither godless foe nor rival can divert—thus securing exclusive protection (20.36.11).

Kind of hymn

Abhicarika / Apotropaic (Indraic battle-protection; repulsion of hostile forces)

What it is for

Victory and protection: the sundering of stubborn opposition, securing Indra’s exclusive assistance, and strengthening the patron’s sovereignty and success.

Who it is for

Kings, warriors, householders seeking protection, and Atharvanic practitioners adapting Ṛgvedic Indra hymns for defensive and victory-oriented rites.

Also used as

  • Apotropaic
  • Paustika
  • Indra-stuti (royal empowerment)

The deity

Indra is the paradigmatic warrior-sovereign: the bull of strength, wielder of decisive force, and the divine ally who breaks fortified resistance and grants lordship and success.

Powers of the deity

  • Breaks strongholds and entrenched obstacles (dṛḷhāḥ/fastnesses)
  • Thought-swift tactical power (manojavā)
  • Overwhelming, self-born strength and daring assault
  • Grants victory, rulership, and protection to the patron
  • Arrives with boon-bearing teams (niyut) and confers exclusive aid not accessible to foes

Why the deity is called

To draw Indra near through praise and offering so that his irresistible force disperses enemies/obstacles, protects the patron, and delivers non-transferable boons that rivals cannot appropriate.

The seer

  • Ṛgvedic seer of the RV source-hymn (Indra-stuti; specific attribution follows the RV parallel for AV 20.36)Angiras. Indra-stuti for royal power: victory-charms, fort/obstacle-breaking, repulsion of hostile forces, and securing the deity’s exclusive support for the sacrificer

Other hymns of this seer

  • AV 20 Indra hymns drawn from RV parallels (source-hymn attributions)
  • Ṛgvedic Indra-stutis in Triṣṭubh associated with the same RV hymn-source tradition

Preparing for the rite

  • Establish a clean recitation space; seat the patron facing east (or toward the field of action).
  • Mentally ‘yoke’ Indra’s niyut (teams) as a visualization of rapid divine support; set a simple offering if available (ghee/oblation as per local practice).
  • State the sankalpa: protection, victory, and dispersal of hostile forces/obstacles.

The rite

  • Recite the sukta in Triṣṭubh cadence with emphasis on Indra’s epithets (puruhūta, vṛṣabha, satyaḥ, sahasvān).
  • At verses describing breaking of fastnesses (e.g., 20.36.6), perform a symbolic ‘splitting’ gesture (separating hands) to mark dispersal of resistance.
  • At the concluding invitation (20.36.11), beckon Indra’s approach (ā gahi) and seal the request for exclusive boons (those no foe can choose).

What it needs

  • None required by the hymn text (optional: simple oblation such as ghee; water for ācamana).

When

Before undertaking conflict/competition, at dawn or prior to a decisive action; also suitable as a protective recitation when threats are perceived.

Frequently Asked Questions

It is used to invoke Indra for protection and victory—especially to break through stubborn obstacles or hostile opposition and to secure strong divine support for the patron.

It establishes exclusivity and authority: the sacrificer’s praise and offering are directed to the most effective divine ally, ensuring focused power rather than dispersed devotion.

No materials are required by the hymn itself; it works as a recitation. If one follows a yajña-style setting, a simple oblation (like ghee) may accompany the praise, but it is optional here.
