Inside Khanda 4

Key teachings

  • • Brahman transcends the threefold suffering (tāpatraya): ādhyātmika (bodily/mental), ādhibhautika (external/environmental), and ādhidaivika (divine/supernatural), establishing Its absolute freedom from all forms of affliction. • The section describes liberation from the six kośas and the six ūrmis (emotional turbulences like hunger, thirst, grief, delusion, old age, and death), indicating Brahman's complete transcendence over psycho-physical limitations. • Brahman is beyond the five sheaths (pañcakośa)—annamaya, prāṇamaya, manomaya, vijñānamaya, and ānandamaya—affirming It is neither the gross body, vital sheath, mental sheath, intellectual sheath, nor even the bliss sheath. • The six bhāva-vikāras (states of being—birth, existence, growth, transformation, decline, and death) are absent in Brahman, proving Its eternal, changeless nature. • The text systematically negates all triadic epistemological and ontological frameworks: kartṛ-karma-kārya (doer-action-result), jñātṛ-jñāna-jñeya (knower-knowledge-known), and bhoktṛ-bhoga-bhogya (enjoyer-enjoyment-enjoyable), establishing Brahman as sarvavilakṣaṇa—utterly unlike anything conceivable. • This comprehensive apophatic methodology (neti-neti) leads the seeker to recognize that the Ultimate Reality cannot be captured by any category of human experience or conceptual framework.
