Devata

Indra-Agni (dual)

Inside Sukta 108

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

A vivid summons: Indra and Agni are invited on their most radiant chariot that beholds all realms, to arrive together and drink Soma.

  2. Development

The hymn broadens the call—wherever they may be delighting (home, brahman, or royal power), they are urged to turn toward the sacrificer; the refrain-like Soma invitation reinforces ritual immediacy.

  3. Climax

After the deities are envisioned as having drunk Soma, the poet asks them to ‘win’ (saṃ-jay) all riches and plenitudes for the worshippers—victory translated into tangible prosperity.

  4. Where it settles

A final, stabilizing benediction invokes Mitra-Varuṇa, Aditi, Sindhu, Earth and Heaven to enlarge and uphold the community, sealing the rite with cosmic support.

The deity: Indra–Agni

  • In the VedaIndra and Agni are invoked as a paired presence: the warrior-lord of might (Indra) and the priestly fire that carries offerings (Agni). Together they are asked to come on a brilliant chariot that “surveys the worlds,” to take their seat at the rite, and to drink Soma as the sign of their active participation.
  • Cosmic functionIndra embodies victorious force that breaks obstacles and secures goods; Agni embodies the sacrificial channel that links humans and gods. As a dual, they unite power and ritual order—winning prosperity through rightly kindled worship and decisive strength.
  • Inner significanceIndra–Agni symbolizes the union of will/heroic energy (indra) with disciplined aspiration and transformative fire (agni). In practice, it points to aligning inner vigor with sacred intention so that effort becomes effective and fruitful.

The seer

  • Parucchepa Daivodāsi (traditional attribution; some verses/recension notes treat the rishi as uncertain)Daivodāsa line (connected in tradition with the Bharadvāja/Āṅgirasa milieu of early Mandala 1); exact gotra uncertain · Remembered as an early seer-poet associated with Indra-related praise and with the Daivodāsa tradition of royal-protective hymns; his verses often combine martial victory with sacrificial invitation.

Frequently Asked Questions

They are praised as a paired power: Indra brings victorious strength, and Agni brings the sacrificial fire that carries offerings. Together they make the ritual effective and prosperity-giving.

In Soma rites, inviting the gods to drink Soma means inviting their presence and power into the sacrifice. It signals that the offering is accepted and that blessings can flow to the worshippers.

The hymn ends by widening the blessing beyond Indra–Agni alone. These names represent cosmic order, protection, abundance, and the stable supports of life, sealing the prayer with universal well-being.
