Sukta 130

Sukta 1.130

Devata

Indra

Mantras

Mantra 1

Mantra 2

Mantra 3

Mantra 4

Mantra 5

Mantra 6

Mantra 7

Mantra 8

Mantra 9

Mantra 10

Inside Sukta 130

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

A direct summons: Indra is invited to come near from the far realm and take his seat at the worship like a king returning home.

  2. Development

The poets present their hymn as a carefully crafted vehicle—like a chariot—meant to delight and convey Indra, while highlighting his role as giver of strength and wealth.

  3. Climax

Indra is celebrated as the conquering power, set forward like a race-steed for the winning of ‘all treasures’—the decisive surge of force that secures victory.

  4. Where it settles

The hymn ends with a protective request: Indra, praised by the Divodāsa lineage, should guard the people with strong safeguards and continue to expand in greatness like heaven through its days.

The deity: Indra

  • In the VedaIndra is the mighty soma-drinker, ‘satpati’ (lord of the true seat/house), a conquering hero and protector who smashes obstacles and ‘forts’ (purāḥ) and brings abundant wealth and strength to his worshippers.
  • Cosmic functionHe releases and increases life-power in the world—upholding order through victory over constricting forces, granting rain/abundance, and ensuring triumph in contests and battles.
  • Inner significanceIndra symbolizes awakened will and courageous clarity that breaks inner ‘strongholds’—fear, inertia, and limiting habits—so energy, confidence, and right action can flow.

The seer

  • Parāśara VāsiṣṭhaVasiṣṭha gotra (Vāsiṣṭha lineage) · A Vasiṣṭha-line seer associated with Indra praise and the poetic idea that hymns are ‘fashioned’ like a chariot to invoke and empower the deity in sacrifice.

Famous verses

Frequently Asked Questions

To come to the Soma offering, accept the praise, and grant strength, victory, wealth, and protection—especially by breaking obstacles compared to ‘forts.’

It means the hymn is carefully crafted as an effective vehicle of invocation: the mantra itself ‘carries’ Indra to the ritual and helps set his power in motion for winning treasures.

On the outer level it is Indra’s battle power against enemies and strongholds; inwardly it symbolizes breaking through inner blockages that prevent energy, courage, and success.
