Sukta 1.8
वयं शूरेभिरस्तृभिरिन्द्र त्वया युजा वयम् । सासह्याम पृतन्यतः ॥
vayáṃ śūrébhir astṛ́bhir índra tváyā yujā́ vayám | sāsahyā́ma pṛtanyatáḥ ||
Nós, com as forças heroicas e invictas, ó Indra, jungidos a ti como companheiro de jugo—que prevaleçamos sobre os que nos fazem guerra: as forças da divisão e das trevas.
We, with heroic unstruck powers, O Indra, yoked with you—may we prevail over those who wage battle against us.
The ‘śūra’ powers are courageous faculties awakened by aspiration; ‘astṛ’ (unstruck/unwounded) suggests energies protected from discouragement and hostile impact. Yoked with Indra (illumined mind) as yoke-fellow, the seeker’s forces act in harmony and overcome the battling tendencies—division, depression, reactive vital movements—that oppose the yoga.
When human energies are joined to a higher intelligence, they become resilient and victorious; right alliance makes the being ‘unwoundable’.
inner battle, victory over obstruction, Indra as ally, yoking of powers
Even without a fixed rishi-ascription, the mantra bears the early Indra-yoga stamp: victory through yoking the human energies to the illumined power.
Allied champion who fights alongside the gods, ensuring victory and safe passage.
Companion-force of illumination that coordinates and protects the active energies.
Indra invocations for victory and protection; supportive verse in Indra hymn recitation.

3 × 8 (probable)
Energetic and collective—emphasizes ‘we’ and ‘with’.
Builds camaraderie and resilience; good for stabilizing the vital in courage.
Indra-invocation in Soma context (general); used to strengthen the sacrificer/chanter for victory and overcoming hostile forces—inner and outer.
When seeking strength against adversities and hostile influences.
Chant as a protective and empowering accompaniment to offerings/praise.
Use before facing conflict or criticism; chant to remain ‘unstruck’—steady, not reactive—while acting from clarity.
Key roots and forms: (1) śūra- ‘hero, strong one’ (adj./noun; semantic field of strength and valor). (2) astṛ́- analyzed as a-stṛ́ ‘not struck’ (a- privative + √tṛ/√tar ‘to cross/overcome’ is unlikely here; better taken in Vedic usage as ‘unstruck, unwounded, intact’—a quality of energies that remain unbroken in conflict). Instrumental plural: astṛ́-bhiḥ. (3) yujā́: from √yuj ‘to yoke, join, harness’; here an instrumental/comitative sense ‘with (you) as yoke-fellow/ally’, indicating integrated force. (4) sāsahyā́ma: desiderative/intensive-future-wish nuance from √sah ‘to conquer, endure, be able’; expresses prayer for victorious capacity. (5) pṛtanyatáḥ: present participial/agentive from √pṛtan/√pṛt ‘to fight’ (pṛtanā ‘battle’), gen./abl. plural ‘of/from those who do battle’—the opposing host.
ṛta (right order upheld by victorious truth-force), sahas (spiritual might; capacity to endure and conquer), saṃyoga/yoga (yoking of human effort with divine power)
Yoking with Indra aligns action to ṛta; hostile fighters represent disordering forces.
Formation of the divine-human alliance enabling evolutionary victory.
Yogic integralism: cooperation of higher mind with life-force.
Yoke = disciplined linkage of energies; battle = inner contest; ‘unstruck’ = invulnerability born of right poise.
Feel Indra as the ‘yoke-fellow’—a higher clarity seated above the brow guiding the life-force.
ājñā
Even breathing with silent repetition on exhale; emphasize steadiness to cultivate ‘astṛ’ (unstruck) poise.
Steady, courageous, integrated.
When attacked by doubt or emotion, return to the sense of being ‘yoked’ to a higher witness-intelligence; act only after regaining that linkage.
Use standard Rigvedic accenting; keep repeated ‘vayam’ evenly grounded to emphasize collective resolve.
Do not rush ‘indra tvayā yujā’; keep ‘yujā’ clear to preserve the yoking image.
śūrebhiḥ: long ‘ū’, soft ‘bh’, astṛbhiḥ: consonant cluster ‘stṛ’ with vocalic ‘ṛ’ clean, pṛtanyataḥ: retroflex ‘ṇy’ avoided—here ‘ny’ dental; keep ‘taḥ’ with soft visarga
Steady, courageous, not harsh; sustained breath support.
