Sukta 10.184

Devata

Viṣṇu, Tvaṣṭṛ, Prajāpati, Dhātṛ (collective generative powers)

RV 10.184 to krótki, lecz potężny hymn twórczy, wzywający wielu boskich rzemieślników stworzenia, aby ustanowili i chronili ciążę. Prosi Wiśnu o „przygotowanie łona”, Twaštrę o ukształtowanie formy, Prađapatiego i Dhātrę o tchnienie i umieszczenie embrionu, a następnie wzywa Sinīwālī, Saraswatī i Aświnów, aby zabezpieczyli poczęcie i doprowadzili dziecko do pełnego porodu w dziesiątym miesiącu.

Mantras

Mantra 1

विष्णुर्योनिं कल्पयतु त्वष्टा रूपाणि पिंशतु । आ सिञ्चतु प्रजापतिर्धाता गर्भं दधातु ते ॥

Niech Wisznu przygotuje łono szerokości; niecz Twasztr ukształtuje formy. Niech Pradżapati wleje siłę życiową; niecz Dhatri umieści dla ciebie embrion - by nowe istnienie mogło być ugruntowane we właściwym porządku i rozległości.

Mantra 2

गर्भं धेहि सिनीवालि गर्भं धेहि सरस्वति । गर्भं ते अश्विनौ देवावा धत्तां पुष्करस्रजा ॥

Zaszczep w nas lśniące nasienie stawania się, o Sinīvālī; zaszczep to samo nasienie, o Sarasvatī. Niech dwa Aśvinowie, boskie moce szybkiego prawego działania, umieszczą to nasienie w nas, uwieńczone lotosem czystego rozkwitania, aby wewnętrzne narodziny mogły być zapewione.

Mantra 3

हिरण्ययी अरणी यं निर्मन्थतो अश्विना । तं ते गर्भं हवामहे दशमे मासि सूतवे ॥

Tę złotą Aranī, z której Aśvinowie wyciskają ukrytą moc, wzywamy to właśnie uformowane nasienie, aby mogło zostać sprowadzone do narodzin w dziesiątym miesiącu: właściwe dojrzewanie i wyzwolenie tego, co zostało prawdziwie ukształtowane wewnątrz.

Inside Sukta 184

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

A coordinated invocation of cosmic generative powers to ‘prepare the womb’ and rightly found new life (Viṣṇu, Tvaṣṭṛ, Prajāpati, Dhātṛ).

  2. Development

The focus shifts from cosmic agencies to intimate maternal/fertility guardians—Sinīvālī and Sarasvatī—asking for the garbha to be set securely, with the Aśvins ensuring swift, right action and protection.

  3. Climax

The vivid symbol of the ‘golden araṇī’ churning forth hidden potency: creation as a sacred ignition culminating in a firmly established embryo.

  4. Where it settles

A clear, practical prayer for fruition—birth in the tenth month—signaling completion, safety, and orderly emergence into life.

The deity: Viṣṇu–Tvaṣṭṛ–Prajāpati–Dhātṛ

  • In the VedaViṣṇu is invoked as the one who establishes the ‘yoni’ (womb/space) and makes it broad and fit; Tvaṣṭṛ is the divine fashioner who ‘shapes the forms’; Prajāpati is lord of progeny who pours in generative vitality; Dhātṛ is the establisher who ‘places’ and supports the embryo. Sinīvālī and Sarasvatī are asked to ‘set the garbha,’ while the Aśvins—healer-twins—complete the establishment and ensure a successful birth, linked with the golden araṇī (fire-churning symbolism).
  • Cosmic functionTo coordinate the cosmic powers of space-making (Viṣṇu), form-giving (Tvaṣṭṛ), life-infusing generativity (Prajāpati), and lawful establishment/sustenance (Dhātṛ), culminating in protection, maturation, and timely emergence of new life.
  • Inner significanceThe hymn maps inner creation: widening receptivity (yoni), shaping intention into form, energizing it with prāṇa-like force, and stabilizing it until it ripens into a ‘birth’—a concrete result, insight, or new beginning—under the guidance of healing, harmonizing powers (Aśvins) and nourishing speech/flow (Sarasvatī).

The seer

  • AniruktaThis hymn is part of the late Rigvedic (Maṇḍala 10) family-book–external corpus where several sūktas are preserved without a fixed, remembered seer; it is notable for its focused use in rites for conception, safe gestation, and timely delivery.
