Sukta 1.29
ससन्तु त्या अरातयो बोधन्तु शूर रातयः । आ तू न इन्द्र शंसय गोष्वश्वेषु शुभ्रिषु सहस्रेषु तुवीमघ ॥
sasántu tyā́ árātayo bódhantu śūra rātáyaḥ | ā́ tú na indra śaṃsaya góṣv áśveṣu śubhríṣu sahásreṣu tuvīmagha ||
Niech ci, którzy wstrzymują i przeszkadzają, zostaną pomniejszeni; niech dary się obudzą, o bohaterze. Przyjdź, Indro, i uczyń naszą prawdziwą chwałę skuteczną w promieniach i w mocach, w lśniących tysiąckrotnych pełniach.
Let those who are ungenerous/hostile diminish; let the gifts awaken, O hero. Come, Indra, and make us praised among cows and horses, among shining thousandfold riches.
Let the withholding forces (arātayaḥ)—inner miserliness, obstruction, and hostile formations—be reduced (sasantu). Let the true gifts (rātayaḥ)—openings of grace, capacities, inspirations—wake up (bodhantu). Then Indra can establish the right acclaim (true mantra-force) in rays of knowledge and energies of action, in the bright thousandfold plenitudes of a widened being.
Transformation is a shift of economy in consciousness: from hoarding and blockage to awakened generosity of force and insight. When obstruction wanes and gifts awaken, life becomes luminous abundance.
boon-activation, anti-obstruction, Indra as giver
A classic Vasiṣṭha movement: diminish the obstructors, awaken the gifts, then seal the realization with the refrain calling Indra to establish the right word in light and force.
The seer frames inner progress as removal of resistance and awakening of divine giving—preconditions for stable illumination and abundance.
Bestower of riches and victory; awakener of divine gifts; diminisher of hostile forces.
Courageous illumination that breaks inner stinginess and inertia, releasing a generous flow of energies and insights.
Indra-oriented praise for prosperity and overcoming ‘non-givers’ (obstructing forces) in Soma ritual milieu

4 × ~12; antithetic first pāda (obstructors vs gifts) followed by stabilizing refrain
Contrastive opening (two commands) then expansive affirmation; rhythm supports ‘clearing then filling’.
Psychologically cleansing: first a purgative feel (sasantu), then an enlivening uplift (bodhantu), culminating in confident invocation.
Prayer for removal of withholding forces and activation of boons during Soma rite
When seeking increase of boons and reduction of obstacles; suitable as a repeated refrain in communal chant
Recitation with offering; intention to awaken ‘rāti’ (gifts)
As a practice for releasing scarcity mentality and awakening generosity/flow: chant before acts of giving, service, or creative work.
arāti: a- (negation) + rā́ti 'gift' (√rā 'give')—thus 'withholding'. bodhantu from √budh. rātayaḥ plural of rāti: not material only; inner sense: releases of force, joy, knowledge.
giving vs withholding as cosmic-psychic polarity, awakening of inner riches, Rita as right circulation (flow) of powers
Arātis are anti-ṛta (blockers of flow); rātis are ṛta’s benefic circulation in life.
Truthfulness aligns one with right distribution; falsehood contracts and withholds.
Abundance as awakened circulation: creation is not hoarded substance but flowing divine giving.
Integral reading: resistance vs grace; transformation through opening to higher distribution (rāti).
dawn-like awakening (implied by bodhantu)
Awakening = dawn of higher energies; gifts = inflow of divine powers; obstructors = inner knots that constrict circulation.
Release contraction (arāti) and awaken inner gifts (rāti): generosity of energy, insight, love.
Anāhata (generosity/flow) with Maṇipūra (power to overcome obstruction)
Breathing with offering: inhale ‘receive gift’, exhale ‘give/let go’; chant sasantu… on exhale, bodhantu… on inhale, then the refrain steady.
Expansive, confident, giving; abundance-consciousness.
Identify one withholding habit (fear, resentment, tight control). On sasantu, let it diminish. On bodhantu, invite a specific gift (clarity, courage, kindness). Seal with the refrain to establish it in light (go) and force (aśva).
Vedic accents; emphasize the contrast words arātayaḥ vs rātayaḥ with clean articulation.
Keep the two imperatives balanced: sasantu (let diminish) / bodhantu (let awaken). Slight pause before the refrain for clarity.
sasantu: light dental s; short a, arātayaḥ: long ā; distinct r; final ḥ lightly aspirated, bodhantu: aspirate dh; nasal ntu, rātayaḥ: long ā; do not confuse with arātayaḥ—keep initial r clear
Bright and invigorating; let bodhantu lift the tone slightly.
