ਇਹ ਛੋਟਾ ਅਗਨੀ-ਸੂਕਤ ਸੰਖੇਪ ਆਥਰਵਣਿਕ ਪ੍ਰਤੀ-ਮੰਤਰ ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਅਗਨੀ ਦੇ ਅਰਚਿਸ (ਲੌ), ਸ਼ੋਚਿਸ (ਝੁਲਸਾਉਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਤਾਪ), ਅਤੇ ਤੇਜਸ (ਕਾਂਤੀ) ਨੂੰ ਸਾਧਨ ਬਣਾ ਕੇ ਵੈਰ-ਭਾਵ ਨੂੰ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਭੇਜਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਉੱਤੇ ਹੀ ਵਾਪਸ ਮੋੜ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਇਹ ਰਸਮੀ ‘ਪ੍ਰਤ੍ਯ-’ (ਉਲਟ-ਫੇਰ/ਵਾਪਸੀ) ਕ੍ਰਿਆ ਵਜੋਂ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ—ਕਰਤਾ ਨੂੰ ਘ੍ਰਿਣਾ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਨੂੰ ਸਾੜ ਕੇ, ਝੁਲਸਾ ਕੇ, ਉਸ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਕਤੀ ਨਿਸ਼ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਕੋਸ਼ਿਸ਼ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ; ਅਤੇ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਨਿਯੰਤਰਿਤ ਅੱਗ ਦੀ ਤਾਕਤ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਘਰ ਦੀ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।

शत्रुनाशनम्। अग्ने॒ यत् ते॒ तप॒स्तेन॒ तं प्रति॑ तप॒ यो॒३स्मान् द्वेष्टि॒ यं व॒यं द्वि॒ष्मः
ਸ਼ਤ੍ਰੁਨਾਸ਼ਨ। ਹੇ ਅਗਨੀ, ਤੇਰਾ ਜੋ ਤਪ (ਤਪਸ) ਹੈ—ਉਸੇ ਤਪ ਨਾਲ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਦੰਡ ਵਜੋਂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਤਪਾ, ਸਾੜ; ਜੋ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਦ੍ਵੈਸ਼ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਅਸੀਂ ਸ਼ਤ੍ਰੁ ਮੰਨਦੇ ਹਾਂ।

अग्ने॒ यत् ते॒ हर॒स्तेन॒ तं प्रति॑ हर॒ यो॒३स्मान् द्वेष्टि॒ यं व॒यं द्वि॒ष्मः
ਹੇ ਅਗਨੀ, ਤੇਰਾ ਜੋ ਹਰ (ਦਾਹਕ ਸ਼ਕਤੀ/ਸੜਾਉਂਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਹਾਰ) ਹੈ—ਉਸੇ ਹਰ ਨਾਲ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਦੰਡ ਵਜੋਂ ਉਸ ਉੱਤੇ ਹਰ ਕਰ, ਪ੍ਰਹਾਰ ਕਰ; ਜੋ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਦ੍ਵੈਸ਼ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਅਸੀਂ ਆਪ ਦ੍ਵੈਸ਼ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਾਂ।

ਹੇ ਅਗਨੀ, ਤੇਰੀ ਉਸੀ ਲਪਟ ਨਾਲ, ਜੋ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਦ੍ਵੈਸ਼ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ—ਅਤੇ ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਅਸੀਂ ਦ੍ਵੈਸ਼ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਾਂ—ਉਸ ਉੱਤੇ ਤੂੰ ਵਾਪਸ ਭੜਕ, ਪ੍ਰਤਿਜ੍ਵਲਿਤ ਹੋ।

ਹੇ ਅਗਨੀ, ਆਪਣੇ ਉਸ ਤੇਜ ਨਾਲ—ਜੋ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਦ੍ਵੇਸ਼ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਅਸੀਂ ਦ੍ਵੇਸ਼ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਾਂ—ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਤੇਜ-ਹੀਣ ਕਰ ਦੇ।
