Sukta 1.44
यद्देवानां मित्रमहः पुरोहितोऽन्तरो यासि दूत्यम् । सिन्धोरिव प्रस्वनितास ऊर्मयोऽग्नेर्भ्राजन्ते अर्चयः ॥
yád devā́nāṃ mitra-mahaḥ puró-hito’ntáro yā́si dū́tyam | síndhor iva prá-svanitāsa ū́rmayo’gnér bhrā́jante arcáyaḥ ||
When you, O great friend of the gods, set in front, go between them on the mission of mediation, then Agni’s flames shine like the loud-sounding waves of a river.
Agni as mitramahaḥ is the power of harmony and friendship with the divine: the will that is acceptable to higher truth. As purohita, placed in front, he moves ‘between’—bridging the human and the divine, or among the divine powers themselves in us, coordinating their action. When this mediation becomes active, the flames (arcayaḥ) surge and resound like river-waves: a living current of tapas and inspiration, audible/feelable as inner vibration, carrying the offering of the being forward.
When the will becomes a true mediator—harmonizing and coordinating higher impulses—energy flows powerfully and joyfully, like a river released into its proper channel.
Agni as intermediary, imagery of river and waves, flames as rays of knowledge, successful invocation sign
Kāṇva imagery often joins fire and water metaphors—tapas and flow—showing dynamic inner processes rather than static ritual description.
Kaṇva presents a key psychological sign: when mediation is established, the inner energy becomes a resonant flow—an experiential marker of effective sadhana.
Intermediary among gods; carrier of offerings; activator of luminous force in the rite.
Coordinating intelligence of will that harmonizes higher powers and releases a strong current of inspired energy.
Agni as intermediary in offerings; descriptive praise during soma/agna rites

4 × ~11
Rolling, wave-like movement in the second half (sindhor iva… ūrmayaḥ), mimicking the imagery.
Produces a felt ‘surge’—good for sensing inner currents of force rising and spreading.
Praise of Agni’s mediating motion (dūtya) and the visible sign of success: shining flames; used to mark effective kindling and the ‘between-worlds’ function of Agni.
During invocatory/praise sections emphasizing Agni’s mediator role
Recitation accompanying offerings; contemplation of Agni’s ‘between’ function as he carries oblations
Use when feeling divided or scattered: invoke Agni as mediator to harmonize competing impulses; listen for the ‘river-sound’ of unified energy.
Key terms: (1) (mitra-) ‘friend’ from PIE *mitro- ‘contract/friendship’ (cf. Iranian Miθra); here as relational harmony. (2) (antara-) ‘between’—mediating space. (3) (síndhu-) ‘river’—forceful flow; (4) (ūrmi-) ‘wave’—surging movement. (5) / (arci-/arcis-) ‘ray, flame’ from √ ‘to shine, praise’—linking light and hymn.
mediation between planes (antara dūtya), harmony of powers (mitra), mantra as radiant force (arcayaḥ as rays)
Mediation ‘between’ powers implies restoration of ṛta—harmonious coordination.
Release of force as a river-current: manifestation through ordered flow.
Symbolic Vedic psychology (energies as waves; Agni as organizing will).
River/waves = streaming consciousness-force and rhythmic prāṇa; flames = luminous energies; sound = inner nāda-like resonance of awakened tapas.
Unify divided parts: let the inner fire mediate between higher intention and surface habits until energy becomes a single ‘stream’.
Viśuddha (sound/resonance) and Anāhata (harmonizing center)
Humming exhale (bhrāmarī-like) softly after chanting to sense ‘prasvanita’ (resounding waves) internally.
Coherent flow-state; energized harmony.
Chant once, then sit listening for subtle inner sound and a wave-like movement of breath/energy; whenever conflict arises, return to the sense of Agni ‘antaraḥ’—the bridge.
Observe svarita turns that naturally ‘roll’ in the river-image segment; keep pitch continuity to evoke waves.
Emphasize ‘sindhor iva’ with a smooth legato; keep ‘prasvanitāsaḥ’ resonant without rushing.
mitramahaḥ: split as mitra-mahaḥ; final visarga light, antaraḥ: clear retroflex ‘r’ tap; visarga soft, prasvanitāsaḥ: ‘sv’ conjunct smooth; long ‘ā’ maintained, ūrma yaḥ: long ‘ū’ sustained
Flowing, resonant, slightly sonorous to mirror ‘prasvanita’ (resounding).
