  • ‘अव वधः’ kept separate as preverb + object
  • ‘शये’ is 1sg Ātmanepada present of √शी ‘to lie’. Accent marks in the saṃhitā text are not reproduced in the pada forms here

Outer meaning

Indra strikes down Dānu, the mother connected with Vṛtra’s offspring; roles invert—upper/lower shift—and she lies like a cow with her calf.

Inner meaning

After the main obstruction falls, its generative matrix (Dānu)—the fertile field of the subconscient that breeds recurring resistances—also collapses. The ‘upper becoming mother, lower becoming son’ suggests a reversal of false hierarchy: what seemed foundational (lower nature) is revealed dependent, while the higher principle becomes the true source. The image of the cow with calf indicates power (śakti) reduced to inert dependency when separated from illumination.

Universal truth

To be free, one must not only defeat a visible obstacle but also transform the underlying habit-field that reproduces it; otherwise power remains bound to old dependencies.

Themes

Defeat of Dānu/Vṛtra lineage, Reversal of power, Cow symbolism (nourishment inverted)
