द्वादशः सर्गः · Kaikeyi’s Boons and Dasaratha’s Moral Collapse
Ayodhya Kanda 12
Spoken by Dasharatha to KaikeyiSetting: Ayodhya (palace)Places named: forest (vana)
O lady how do you wish this righteous and illustrious Rama to dwell in the forest for fourteen years?
To will suffering for the righteous is a sign of adharma; power must be restrained by compassion and justice.
Contemplate Rāma as dharmātmā; cultivate ahiṃsā in intention—do not ‘desire’ another’s hardship.
The ‘dharmātmā’ as sthitaprajña-like steadiness; exile as tapas imposed unjustly reflects misuse of power (aiśvarya) under avidyā.
Īśa/Kaṭha motifs: the noble (śreyaḥ) opposed to the merely desired (preyaḥ); choosing exile for the righteous is choosing preyaḥ-driven harm.
Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa 2.14 (Daśaratha’s anguish at the two boons and exile); Mahābhārata: exile motifs (Pāṇḍava vanavāsa) as political injustice parallels
Vedic vana as liminal space of tapas (general śruti-smṛti motif)
Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa 2.12.23 (tenderness vs harsh forest); Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa 2.18-2.20 (Kaikeyī’s hard resolve)
Anuṣṭup (śloka)
Solemn
Lower register, sustained niṣāda for lament, rising to pañcama on ‘katham’
The verse invokes dharma as moral fitness: it is wrong to impose severe suffering on a righteous person without just cause.
Kaikeyī has demanded Rāma’s banishment for fourteen years; Daśaratha protests, highlighting Rāma’s righteousness and fame.
Rāma’s dharmic character (dharmātman) and honorable reputation (yaśas) are foregrounded as reasons such treatment is unjust.
