Sukta 4
र॒श्मिभि॒र्नभ॒ आभृ॑तं महे॒न्द्र ए॒त्यावृ॑तः
raśmíbhir nábha ā́bhṛtaṃ mahéndra ety ā́vṛtaḥ
With rays the firmament is borne and filled: great Indra goeth on, encompassed round about.
किरणांनी नभ (आकाश) धारण केलेले व परिपूर्ण झालेले आहे; महेंद्र सर्व बाजूंनी आवृत होऊन पुढे जातात.
Rishi: Indra/Āditya-cycle attribution (anukramaṇī-dependent).
Devata: Mahendra (Indra as great sovereign; solarized in imagery).
Chandas: Likely anuṣṭubh-pāda tendency (but excerpted line does not guarantee full metrical certainty).
Primary: vira
Secondary: adbhuta
Sāyaṇa takes ‘rays’ as the sun’s effulgent agencies that ‘furnish’ the sky; Mahendra is read as the mighty sovereign power moving in splendour. ‘Āvṛta’ is both physical (clad) and functional (guarded), making the verse apt for protective investiture.
To invest the beneficiary with a surrounding protection, like the sky encompassed by rays; to secure dominance and warding through ‘Mahendra’ as moving, armoured power.
Stress-boundary practice: cultivating a felt sense of safety/containment (grounding, psychological ‘shielding’).
shantika
Beneficiary (householder/king/ritual subject)
To surround the beneficiary with a radiant enclosure, ensuring steadiness, dominance, and warding.
Cosmic homology + verbal sealing: sky upheld by rays → person/space upheld by radiance; refrain repetition as ‘circling’.
Evil eye, hostile speech, sorcery, fear, loss of authority
The sky/firmament is carried and filled with rays; Mahendra (Indra in sovereign, solarized form) moves forward, surrounded on all sides.
A psyche held together by ‘rays’—clarity, vigilance, and purposeful attention—forms an inner armor. The sense of being ‘encompassed’ (āvṛta) becomes a trained boundary against intrusion, fear, and destabilizing influences.
Order is sustained by luminous forces: when awareness radiates outward evenly, one’s life-space becomes protected and coherent, like the sky upheld by light.
Radiant boundary awareness (protective aura as disciplined attention).
Manipura (sovereign power)
Slow nasal breathing with a brief pause after inhale while visualizing a ring of light.
A dome of golden rays around the body, thickening at vulnerable points (heart, throat, navel).
Steady, vigilant, unshaken.
Recite 9 or 27 times, feeling the ‘āvṛta’ enclosure expand one arm’s length beyond the skin; end with silent stillness for one minute.
Simple refrain-style; keep udātta lift on key nouns (raśmibhiḥ, nabhaḥ, mahendraḥ) and a firm cadence on āvṛtaḥ.
Sustain the first pada slightly, then ‘seal’ the second with a decisive fall on āvṛtaḥ.
raś-mi-bhir (clear ś, short i), nabhaḥ (final ḥ audible, light), ā-bhṛ-tam (bhṛ as syllabic ṛ), ma-hen-draḥ (ndra conjunct), ā-vṛ-taḥ (vṛ as syllabic ṛ)
Firm, resonant, protective (not shouted).
Best used as a closing refrain after any protective recitation; repetition itself performs the ‘encircling’.
9
Entering conflict-prone spaces; leadership decisions; travel; moving into a new home.
Before stepping out, before public speaking, or when feeling psychically ‘exposed’.
Increased steadiness, confidence, and a felt protective boundary; reduced susceptibility to intimidation or negativity.
Not a substitute for medical care or safety planning; avoid using it to escalate conflict.
