Sukta 24

Rishi: Atharvanic tradition (late AV collection; specific r̥ṣi not securely fixed for this verse alone)

Devata: Jarā (as an affliction to be expelled) and the protective Vāsas/Rakṣā; prosperity powers (Rāy, Poṣa) implicitly invoked

Chandas: Mixed/late AV style; predominantly anuṣṭubh-like cadence with expanded pādas

Inside Sukta 24

How it unfolds

  1. How it opens

The hymn begins by invoking the paradigm of divine ‘encompassing’—the gods enclosing Savitṛ—and transfers that stabilizing enclosure to the patron within the rāṣṭra, under Brahmaṇaspati’s oversight.

  2. What it asks

That the garment-enclosure bestow vārchas and transform jarā-mṛtyu into dīrghāyus, while expelling Old Age and guarding against abhīśasti, especially protecting the milch-kine and household prosperity.

  3. Where its power lies

The efficacy is grounded in authoritative precedent: Bṛhaspati himself ‘bestowed’ this garment for King Soma, making the vāsa a proven, tradition-backed rakṣā.

  4. How it closes

The rite seals in the classic Atharvanic goals: ‘live a hundred years, many autumns,’ wrapped in rāy and poṣa—prosperity secured by protective covering.

Kind of hymn

Paustika (Prosperity) / Rakṣoghna-Apotropaic

What it is for

To convert ‘aging-and-death’ into long life, shield the patron from imprecation and hostile forces, secure cattle-protection, and attract wealth and nourishment through a ritually empowered garment-enclosure.

Who it is for

Householders seeking longevity and prosperity; patrons/leaders seeking rāṣṭra-stability and vārchas; ritual specialists performing protective investiture rites.

Also used as

  • Rakṣoghna-Apotropaic
  • Rājakarma (installation/realm-stability)
  • Bhaiṣajya (longevity/anti-senescence aspect)

The deity

Bṛhaspati/Brahmaṇaspati functions as the lord of sacred utterance and installer of order, here authorizing a protective garment as a ritual ‘covering’ that wards off hostile speech and decay. Jarā appears as a personified affliction to be sent away, while the vāsa itself is treated as an active protective power (rakṣā) that can ‘guard’ cattle and the wearer’s life-force.

Powers of the deity

  • Establishes and stabilizes rāṣṭra (polity/realm) and the patron’s standing within it
  • Confers vārchas (splendor/charisma) and dīrghāyus (long life)
  • Repels jarā (senescence), mṛtyu (premature death), and abhīśasti (imprecation/hostile speech)
  • Protects cattle and prosperity-assets (especially milch-kine)
  • Draws in rāy (wealth) and poṣa (nourishing increase)

Why the deity is called

To legitimize and empower the rite of ‘encompassing’ (pari-dhā) with a consecrated garment so that old age and malediction are expelled and the patron is wrapped in prosperity, longevity, and social/royal stability.

The seer

  • Anukta (Atharvanic/anonymous redactional stratum)Atharvan. Paustika and rakṣoghna charms: protective enclosures (pari-dhā), longevity rites, and household/royal welfare formulas using textiles or coverings as apotropaic technology.

Other hymns of this seer

  • AV 19.23 (adjacent late prosperity/protection material, tradition-linked)
  • AV 19.25 (adjacent late protection/paustika material, tradition-linked)

Preparing for the rite

  • Select a clean, intact cloth/garment (vāsa) intended for wearing or draping; keep it unused or ritually purified.
  • Prepare a quiet, orderly space; seat the patron facing east if possible.
  • If customary in Atharvanic practice, sprinkle the garment with clean water and recite a brief śānti formula to ‘open’ the rite.

The rite

  • Recite the hymn while physically ‘encompassing’ (pari-dhā) the patron—either clothing them in the garment or draping it around shoulders/torso as a protective wrap.
  • At verses addressing jarā, gesture outward or symbolically ‘send away’ the affliction (e.g., sweeping motion away from the body).
  • At prosperity lines (rāy/poṣa), tighten or secure the wrap/knots to ‘seal’ the gain; optionally touch the garment to cattle or the byre threshold for gṛṣṭi-protection.
  • Conclude by affirming long life (śataṃ jīva… ) and maintaining the garment as a protective item to be worn on auspicious occasions.

What it needs

  • Vāsa (protective garment/cloth)
  • Clean water for sprinkling/purification (optional)
  • Optional fastening cord or knotting thread

When

Auspicious mornings; also suitable at life-cycle transitions, recovery from weakness, or before public/royal duties; can be repeated seasonally (at the turn of autumns/śarads).

The main substance

Vāsa (consecrated garment/cloth used as protective wrap)

Amulets

  • The garment itself as a wearable rakṣā (protective covering)
  • Optional knot/cord used to secure the wrap as a ‘seal’

How it is prepared

Purify the cloth (washing or sprinkling), keep it ritually clean, and empower it by reciting the sukta while draping/clothing the patron; retain it for repeated wear in protective/prosperity contexts.

Frequently Asked Questions

It is a protection-and-prosperity hymn that uses a consecrated garment as a ritual covering to drive away old age and hostile imprecation, while securing long life, splendor, cattle-safety, and increase of wealth and nourishment.

The garment functions as a portable ‘enclosure’ (pari-dhā): by wrapping the patron, the mantra turns the covering into a rakṣā (protective power) that repels jarā and stabilizes life-force and prosperity.

No. While it can be applied to establishment and public authority (rāṣṭra), its blessings—longevity, protection from malediction, and prosperity—also fit household use, especially where cattle and sustenance are central.
