Adhyaya 191: Section on the Origin of Madhuparka and the Procedure for Its Ritual Donation

Madhuparkotpatti-dāna-saṅkaraṇa-prakaraṇa

Ritual-Manual

After hearing numerous dharmic teachings, Pṛthivī again questions Varāha, stating that despite extensive instruction she remains unsatisfied and asks for a “secret” clarification: what madhuparka is, what merit (puṇya) it yields, which deity it pertains to, and which substances should be given and to whom. Varāha responds with a didactic account of madhuparka’s origin framed through cosmic-theological narration: following a universal dissolution, a radiant puruṣa emerges from Varāha’s right side, prompting Brahmā’s inquiry into its nature and purpose. Varāha identifies this emergence as “madhuparka,” associated with devotees’ welfare and liberation. He then shifts to prescriptive ritual instruction: the offering’s components, the recitation-mantra for presentation, and the promised soteriological benefit of correct giving—presented as a disciplined practice that supports right order (dharma) and, implicitly, terrestrial stability through regulated sacrificial exchange.

Inside Adhyaya 191

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

Pṛthivī, though previously instructed in many dharmic matters, confesses continued dissatisfaction and requests a ‘secret’ clarification: the true nature of madhuparka, its puṇya, its presiding deity/connection, and the correct substances and recipients for its dāna.

  2. Central event

Varāha answers by first grounding madhuparka in a cosmic origin narrative: after pralaya, a radiant puruṣa manifests from Varāha’s right side; Brahmā (Pitāmaha) inquires about its identity and purpose; Varāha identifies it as ‘madhuparka,’ instituted for devotees’ welfare and liberation-oriented merit.

  3. Climax resolution

The discourse pivots from mythic legitimation to prescriptive ritual: Varāha specifies the canonical components (honey–curd–ghee), the manner of offering and acceptance (dāna/pratigraha), and the mantra-formula to be recited while presenting it—framing correct procedure as dharma-sustaining sacrificial exchange.

  4. Closing phalashruti

A clear soteriological promise: properly performed madhuparka-dāna, with correct substances and mantra, yields elevated gati and liberation-adjacent merit, supporting right order (dharma) and the devotee’s welfare.

Geographical context

The setting is primarily cosmological (saṃkṣaya/pralaya) and dialogic (Varāha–Pṛthivī).

Ritual instructions

  • Primary RitualMadhuparka-dāna (ritual donation/presentation of madhuparka: honey–curd–ghee) with mantra and proper recipient protocol (pratigraha).
  • BenefitPuṇya that supports dharma and yields higher gati; described in liberation-adjacent terms when performed correctly with mantra and proper dāna–pratigraha discipline.

The narrative frame

  • Varāha (Janārdana)Pṛthivī (Vasundharā/Dharaṇī) · Didactic and ‘rahasya’-oriented (secret clarification), moving from cosmological authority to ritual-manual precision.

The emotional journey

  • Dominant RasaŚānta (instructional serenity with devotional gravity)
  • Emotional ProgressionFrom Pṛthivī’s unresolved yearning for a decisive ‘secret’ teaching → awe and legitimizing wonder via cosmic origin → calm assurance through concrete ritual procedure → confidence in promised merit and dharmic stability.

Planning a pilgrimage

  • Visit FeasibilityNot tirtha-specific in the provided chapter; practice is portable and can be performed wherever a qualified recipient and proper materials are available, following the vidhi and mantra.

Frequently Asked Questions

The chapter frames madhuparka as a regulated act of dāna (gift-offering) integrated with mantra and proper procedure, presenting disciplined giving and correct ritual exchange (including pratigraha) as a means to uphold dharma and to orient the practitioner toward a higher gati, described in liberation-adjacent terms.

No tithi, nakṣatra, month, or seasonal timing is specified in the provided verses. The instructions focus on composition (madhu, dadhi, sarpis) and mantra-empowered procedure rather than calendrical scheduling.

Environmental stewardship is implicit through Pṛthivī’s role as interlocutor: the text positions terrestrial consciousness as asking for precise dharmic regulation. By emphasizing orderly ritual giving and restraint in practice, the narrative suggests that stable social-ritual norms function as a mechanism for maintaining cosmic and terrestrial equilibrium, rather than offering explicit ecological directives.

The passage references major cosmological figures—Varāha/Janārdana (Viṣṇu), Brahmā (Pitāmaha), and Rudra—within an origin narrative. No royal dynasties, human lineages, or historically situated sages are named in the provided excerpt.
