Adhyaya 192: Description of the Universal Peace-Recitation and the Madhuparka Rite

Sarvaśānti-varṇanam (Madhuparka-vidhiś ca)

Ritual-Manual (Śānti-pāṭha and Offering Procedure)

After hearing about the origin, offering, and fruits of madhuparka, Pṛthivī—observing disciplined vows—approaches Janārdana (Varāha) and asks what further act should be given or performed to please him. Varāha commends her inquiry and outlines a practical śānti-recitation intended to secure well-being for the realm: protection from disease, stability for the king and the polity, and welfare for vulnerable groups (pregnant women, the elderly), agrarian resources (rice), cattle, and Brahmins, extending peace to devotees, maidens, animals, and all beings. He then links this śānti to the madhuparka offering, detailing substitutions when ingredients are unavailable, and teaches mantras for general use and for the dying person, framing the rite as a means of social stability and saṃsāra-release.

Inside Adhyaya 192

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

Pṛthivī, established in disciplined vows and having already heard the origin, offering-method, and fruits of madhuparka, approaches Janārdana (Varāha) to ask what further act (dāna/karma) most pleases him and benefits the world.

  2. Central event

Varāha praises her welfare-oriented question and teaches a practical, public-facing śānti-pāṭha (peace-recitation) aimed at rāṣṭra-sukha: protection from disease and fear, stability of the king and polity, and well-being for vulnerable groups (pregnant women, the elderly), along with agrarian and pastoral prosperity (rice, rainfall/food, cattle) and the safety of Brahmins, devotees, maidens, animals, and all beings.

  3. Climax resolution

He then explicitly links the śānti-recitation to the madhuparka rite, giving a usable protocol with substitutions when ideal ingredients are unavailable, and supplies mantras for general situations (public peril, liminal places like the royal gate and cremation ground) and a special application for the dying person—framing the rite as both social stabilizer and soteriological aid.

  4. Closing phalashruti

Implied phala: the śānti-pāṭha secures public welfare (health, stability, abundance) and the madhuparka-mantra application at mṛtyu-kāla supports release from saṃsāra; no separate, formal phalaśruti section is specified in the summary.

Geographical context

No specific historical sites, rivers, tīrthas, or ecological regions are named in this adhyāya. The setting is generalized (e.g., rājadvāra ‘royal gate’, śmaśāna ‘cremation ground’) as situational contexts for recitation.

Ritual instructions

  • Primary RitualŚānti-pāṭha (universal peace-recitation) conjoined with madhuparka-vidhi (hospitality/oblation offering with substitutions), including a deathbed application.
  • BenefitCollective benefits: public health, protection from disease and fear, stability of governance, safety of vulnerable groups, and agrarian-pastoral abundance (food/rice, cattle, favorable conditions). Individual benefits: merit through disciplined performance and a deathbed aid oriented toward saṃsāra-mokṣa.

The narrative frame

  • Varāha (Janārdana/Nārāyaṇa/Vāsudeva as addressed in mantras)Pṛthivī · Didactic, pragmatic, and welfare-centric (rājadharma-adjacent), with a compassionate emphasis on protection and stability.

The emotional journey

  • Dominant RasaŚānta (tranquil, pacific devotion) with a protective undercurrent
  • Emotional ProgressionFrom Pṛthivī’s earnest, disciplined inquiry → Varāha’s approving reassurance → expansive, all-inclusive peace-wishing for society and ecology → solemn intensification at the deathbed application → resolution in stability and liberation-oriented confidence.

Planning a pilgrimage

  • Visit FeasibilityNot a site-specific tīrtha chapter; practice is portable and situational (thresholds, civic spaces, liminal grounds). A modern practitioner may adapt it as a household/community śānti recitation rather than a pilgrimage itinerary.

Frequently Asked Questions

The chapter frames ritual speech and offering as instruments of collective welfare: the text instructs a śānti-recitation oriented toward rāṣṭra-sukha (public well-being), protection from disease, and safeguarding vulnerable humans and non-human dependents (cattle, crops), while also presenting the rite as a soteriological aid (saṃsāra-mokṣa) when performed with disciplined intent.

No explicit tithi, nakṣatra, lunar phase, month, or seasonal marker is stated. The text instead gives situational markers (e.g., recitation at the royal gate, cremation ground, times of fear or calamity) and a life-cycle marker (mṛtyu-kāla, ‘time of death’) for a specific madhuparka-based application.

Environmental balance is approached through welfare metrics tied to the Earth’s productivity: the śānti requests su-vṛṣṭi (good rainfall), anna (food), subhikṣa (abundance), and protection of vrīhi (rice) and gavām (cattle). By placing these alongside public health and social stability, the passage implicitly treats ecological conditions as foundational to a well-ordered rāṣṭra and to Pṛthivī’s well-being.

No dynastic lineage, named king, or specific sage genealogy is provided. The cultural figures are typological and institutional—rājā (king), brāhmaṇa, bhakta, kanyā, the elderly, and pregnant women—within a generalized polity, with Varāha/Nārāyaṇa/Vāsudeva/Janārdana as the addressed divine figure in the mantras.
