ભિક્ષુક ઉપનિષદ અથર્વવેદ સાથે સંકળાયેલ સન્ન્યાસ ઉપનિષદ છે, જેમાં માત્ર પાંચ મંત્રોમાં ભિક્ષુક-સંન્યાસીના આદર્શ જીવનનું સંક્ષિપ્ત નિરૂપણ છે. આ ગ્રંથ વિસ્તૃત તત્ત્વચર્ચા કરતાં સંન્યાસની વ્યવહારિક શિસ્ત—અપરિગ્રહ, ભિક્ષા પર નિર્વાહ, ઇન્દ્રિય-નિગ્રહ અને મનની સ્થિરતા—પર ભાર મૂકે છે. ઉપનિષદનો મુખ્ય સંદેશ એ છે કે ભિક્ષુકનું લક્ષ્ય સામાજિક પ્રતિષ્ઠા કે કર્મકાંડ નથી, પરંતુ આત્મજ્ઞાન અને મોક્ષ. માન-અપમાન, લાભ-હાનિ, સુખ-દુઃખ જેવા દ્વંદ્વોમાં સમભાવ રાખવો અને અહંકાર-આસક્તિનો ત્યાગ કરવો—આ ભિક્ષુકના લક્ષણો છે. તેથી વૈરાગ્ય અને સમતા આત્મબોધની અનિવાર્ય ભૂમિ તરીકે પ્રતિષ્ઠિત થાય છે.

Verse 1

ॐ अथ भिक्षूणां मोक्षार्थिनां कुटीचकबहूदकहंसपरमहंसाश्चेति चत्वारः॥१॥

ૐ હવે મોક્ષાર્થી ભિક્ષુઓ વિષે—ચાર પ્રકાર જણાવાયા છે: કુટીચક, બહુદક, હંસ અને પરમહંસ.

कुटीचका नाम गौतमभरद्वाजयाज्ञवल्क्यवसिष्ठप्रभृतयोऽष्टौ ग्रासान् श्वरन्तो योगमार्गे मोक्षमेव प्रार्थयन्ते॥२॥

કુટીચક કહેવાતા—ગૌતમ, ભરદ્વાજ, યાજ્ઞવલ્ક્ય, વસિષ્ઠ વગેરે—આઠ ગ્રાસ માત્ર ગ્રહણ કરીને યોગમાર્ગે એકમાત્ર મોક્ષની જ પ્રાર્થના કરે છે.

अथ बहूदका नाम त्रिदण्डकमण्डलुशिखायज्ञोपवीतकाषायवस्त्रधारिणो ब्रह्मर्षिगृहे मधुमांसं वर्जयित्वाष्टौ ग्रासान् भैक्षाचरणं कृत्वा योगमार्गे मोक्षमेव प्रार्थयन्ते॥३॥

હવે બહુદક કહેવાતા—ત્રિદંડ, કમંડલુ, શિખા, યજ્ઞોપવીત અને કાષાયવસ્ત્ર ધારણ કરનાર—બ્રહ્મર્ષિના ગૃહે મધુ અને માંસ ત્યજી, ભિક્ષાચરણ કરીને આઠ ગ્રાસ લે છે અને યોગમાર્ગે એકમાત્ર મોક્ષની જ પ્રાર્થના કરે છે.

अथ हंसा नाम ग्रामे एकरात्रं नगरे पञ्चरात्रं क्षेत्रे सप्तरात्रं तदुपरि न वसेयुः । गोमूत्रगोमयाहारिणो नित्यं चान्द्रायणपरायणा योगमार्गे मोक्षमेव प्रार्थयन्ते॥४॥

હવે હંસ કહેવાતા: ગામમાં એક રાત, નગરમાં પાંચ રાત, ક્ષેત્ર/તીર્થમાં સાત રાત રહે; તેનાથી વધુ ન વસે. ગોમૂત્ર-ગોમય આહાર પર જીવતા અને નિત્ય ચાન્દ્રાયણ વ્રતમાં પરાયણ રહી, યોગમાર્ગે એકમાત્ર મોક્ષની જ પ્રાર્થના કરે છે.

अथ परमहंसा नाम संवर्तकारुणिश्वेतकेतुजडभरतदत्तात्रेयशुकवामदेवहारीतकप्रभृतयोऽष्टौ ग्रासान् श्वरन्तो योगमार्गे मोक्षमेव प्रार्थयन्ते । वृक्षमूले शून्यगृहे श्मशानवासिनो वा साम्बरा वा दिगम्बरा वा । न तेषां...

હવે પરમહંસ કહેવાતા—સંવર્ત, કારુણિ, શ્વેતકેતુ, જડભરત, દત્તાત્રેય, શુક, વામદેવ, હારીતક વગેરે—આઠ ગ્રાસ માત્ર ગ્રહણ કરીને યોગમાર્ગે એકમાત્ર મોક્ષની જ પ્રાર્થના કરે છે. તેઓ વૃક્ષમૂળે, શૂન્ય ગૃહે અથવા શ્મશાને વસે; વસ્ત્રધારી પણ હોઈ શકે કે દિગંબર પણ. તેમના માટે ધર્મ-અધર્મ, લાભ-અલાભ, શુદ્ધ-અશુદ્ધ એવા ભેદ નથી; દ્વૈતથી રહિત થઈ તેઓ લોઠો, પથ્થર અને કાંસ્ય/સુવર્ણ સમાન ગણે છે. સર્વ વર્ણોમાં ભિક્ષાચરણ કરીને સર્વત્ર આત્માને જ જુએ છે. પછી યદૃચ્છાલબ્ધ ધારણ કરનાર, દ્વંદ્વરહિત, નિષ્પરિગ્રહ, શુક્લ ધ્યાનમાં પરાયણ અને આત્મનિષ્ઠ બની, પ્રાણધારણ માટે નિર્ધારિત કાળે જ ભિક્ષા ગ્રહણ કરે છે. શૂન્યાગાર, દેવગૃહ, તૃણકૂટ, વલ્મીક, વૃક્ષમૂળ, કુંભારશાળા, અગ્નિહોત્રશાળા, નદીપુલિન, ગિરિકંદર, ગુહા-કોટર, નિર્ઝર અને નિર્વસ્ત્ર ભૂમિમાં વિચરી, ત્યાં બ્રહ્મમાર્ગે સમ્યક સિદ્ધ થઈ શુદ્ધમાનસ બની, પરમહંસાચાર અને સંન્યાસ દ્વારા દેહત્યાગ કરે છે—એવા પરમહંસ કહેવાય; એમ ઉપનિષદ કહે છે.
