Sukta 10.80

Devata

Agni

Inside Sukta 80

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

Agni is hailed as the giver of yoked energies, heroic capacity, and fruitful prosperity; he is immediately presented as benefactor and power of accomplishment.

  2. Development

The hymn expands Agni’s scope: he moves through and joins the two worlds, grants wealth and the seer-power that wins plenitudes, and spreads the offering into heaven while abiding in many stations.

  3. Climax

Agni’s cosmic reach is affirmed—his ‘dhāmāni’ are upheld in many places—showing him as both immanent in the rite and universal in the worlds.

  4. Where it settles

The singers present a well-wrought hymn, recall the fashioned sacred Word, ask Agni to protect the worshipper, and request a ‘great draviṇa’ to descend into life.

The deity: Agni

  • In the VedaAgni is the sacred Fire—kindled on the altar, invoked as Hotṛ and messenger—who carries offerings to the gods, illumines the rite, and grants boons to the worshipper. He is praised as youthful (yaviṣṭha), powerful, and present in many abodes (dhāmāni) across the worlds.
  • Cosmic functionMediator between earth and heaven: he conveys oblations upward, brings divine powers downward, and maintains the link between the human rite and the cosmic order (ṛta).
  • Inner significanceThe awakened will and divine flame in the human being—clarity, aspiration, and effective force that unites mind and life, turns intention into right action, and “cooks” raw impulses into luminous understanding.

Frequently Asked Questions

It presents Agni as the divine Fire who empowers human effort—giving strength, heroism, prosperity, and even seer-like insight—while linking earth and heaven through the sacrifice.

In Vedic thought, Agni carries offerings upward and brings divine help downward. Saying he moves through both worlds highlights his role as the connecting power between the human rite and the gods.

Draviṇa can mean wealth in a practical sense, but in hymns like this it also suggests a larger ‘plenitude’—resources, vitality, and fulfilled capacity granted by Agni to the worshipper.
