Sukta 50

Sukta 10.50

Rishi

Unknown/varied in late indices for RV 10.50; commonly an Indra-stuti seer in Anukramaṇī (needs recension-specific confirmation)

Devata

Indra (with epithet Viśvānara/Viśvabhū)

Chandas

Frequently Asked Questions

The hymn primarily praises Indra, especially with the universal epithets Viśvānara and Viśvabhū, describing him as powerful, Soma-gladdened, and responsive to inspired praise.

It means Indra’s presence and power are invoked and intensified through brahman—sacred, well-crafted speech (mantra). The hymn treats the right hymn itself as a force that draws Indra near.

It fits the Soma sacrifice context: during the Soma pressings, the priest-poets recite praise to invite Indra to drink Soma and to grant strength, success in effort, fame, and wealth to the sacrificer.
