Sukta 3

Rishi: Atharvanic/Angiras-type attribution (book-level tradition; specific r̥ṣi varies by anukramaṇī)

Devata: Rohita (as punitive solar/royal power) together with the wrathful cosmic creator (Prajāpati/Āditya-like overlord)

Chandas: Mixed; predominantly triṣṭubh/jagatī-like cadence with refrain (edition-dependent)

Inside Sukta 3

How it unfolds

  1. How it opens

Begins from cosmic first principles: the creator who generated Heaven and Earth, wraps the worlds like a mantle, and contains the six directions—establishing supreme jurisdiction.

  2. What it asks

That Rohita, empowered by the wrathful overlord, make the brahma-injurer tremble, waste away, and be seized by punitive nooses.

  3. Where its power lies

Cosmological images (time-wheel, one-wheeled chariot, all-worlds standing on the wheel; the inescapable stride across ‘footed’ classes) assert that the offender cannot outrun or litigate away the sanction.

  4. How it closes

The refrain functions as the seal: repeated release of bonds (pāśān prati muñca) and enforced wasting (kṣiṇīhi) closes each unit and cumulatively fixes the rite’s verdict.

Famous verses

ud vepaya rohita… prati muñca pāśān
Verse 13.3.1Programmatic opening: grounds the rite in the creator’s cosmic enclosure (drāpi) and declares the offence as guilt against the wrathful deity; introduces the operative refrain to tremble, waste, and bind.Read verse 13.3.1 →

Verse 13.3.18Classic time-wheel cosmology (one-wheeled car; seven names; three-naved wheel) legitimizes punishment as the turning of cosmic order against the offender; the refrain turns cosmology into coercive action.Read verse 13.3.18 →

Kind of hymn

Abhicarika (Punitive/Apotropaic; protection of Brahmin and brahman-power)

What it is for

Retributive protection: the offender is made to tremble, lose strength, and be ‘caught’ in punitive bonds; the Brahmin’s status and brahman-power are publicly and ritually secured.

Who it is for

Brahmins/ritual specialists defending a learned Brahmin or brahmanic authority; patrons (including rulers) seeking to uphold sacral law and deter attacks on priestly legitimacy.

Also used as

  • Apotropaic protection of Brahmins
  • Rājanya/sovereignty legitimation (implicit)
  • Dharmic deterrence via cosmic sanction

The deity

Rohita appears as solar-royal punitive force—an agent of time, order, and sovereign enforcement—paired with a creator/Āditya-like deity whose ‘wrath’ makes the offence against Brahmins a trans-cosmic breach.

Powers of the deity

  • Induces fear and trembling in the offender (ud vepay-)
  • Wastes away hostile vitality (pra kṣiṇīhi)
  • Binds, arrests, and restrains through nooses/bonds (pāśa)
  • Legitimizes punishment by cosmic architecture (heaven-earth, six directions, world-mantle)
  • Operates as time-wheel authority (cakra imagery)
  • Pursues and overtakes the guilty as inescapable sovereignty (one-/two-/three-/four-footed stride motif)

Why the deity is called

To mobilize solar-royal and creator-wrath authority to deter, prosecute, and ritually constrain anyone who harms or humiliates a ‘knowing’ Brahmin, restoring the social-cosmic boundary protected by brahman.

The seer

  • Atharvan/Āṅgiras-type (anukramaṇī varies)Atharvan. Abhicārika and apotropaic charms that defend brahman-power, punish offenders, and ritually ‘bind’ enemies through pāśa/noose imagery grounded in cosmic order.

Other hymns of this seer

  • AV 13.1 (Rohita/cosmic sovereignty complex, tradition-dependent)
  • AV 13.2 (adjacent Rohita-Āditya material, edition/anukramaṇī dependent)
  • AV 4.16 (brahma-hatya/brahma-injury type protections; thematic parallel)

Preparing for the rite

  • Establish a protected recitation space (clean ground, controlled directions), with the intent explicitly stated: protection of the learned Brahmin and prosecution of the brahma-injurer.
  • Prepare a symbolic bond/noose representation (cord, loop, or mental ‘pāśa’ visualization) to align with the hymn’s binding technology.
  • If performed for a community dispute, identify the offender ritually by name or by clear description (without physical harm), focusing on restraint and deterrence.

The rite

  • Recite with the refrain as the operative ‘release’ of punishment: ‘ud vepaya… pra kṣiṇīhi… prati muñca pāśān’.
  • At each refrain, gesture as if tightening/loosening a noose toward the offender’s direction (or toward a symbolic effigy/cord), emphasizing binding and diminution.
  • Conclude by reaffirming that the offence is against the wrathful cosmic deity, not merely against a person, thereby sealing the sanction in cosmic law.

What it needs

  • Pāśa/cord/noose (literal cord or symbolic loop)
  • Optional: water for boundary sprinkling (standard Atharvanic protective setup)
  • Optional: a mantle/cloth (drāpi) as a symbolic ‘world-envelope’ covering the ritual space

When

Performed when brahman-power is threatened—after an insult, injury, seizure of priestly due, or violence against a learned Brahmin; also as a deterrent rite before assemblies or adjudication.

The main substance

Pāśa (noose/cord) as the central ritual technology (literal or symbolic)

Amulets

  • Knotted cord/noose worn or displayed as a restraint-symbol against aggressors
  • Protective thread/cord boundary for the Brahmin’s dwelling or seat

How it is prepared

Form a cord into a loop/noose (or knot-series) while setting the intention of restraint and deterrence; during refrains, ritually ‘deploy’ it by gesture toward the offender’s direction or a symbolic proxy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here Rohita functions as a solar-royal punitive power—an enforcer of cosmic order—who is asked to prosecute and restrain the person who harms a learned Brahmin.

The hymn treats pāśa (“noose/bond”) as the mechanism of divine restraint: the offender is to be seized, restricted, and made unable to continue aggression, with wasting-away as the consequence of guilt.

Its primary aim is abhicārika (punitive/apotropaic): it protects brahman-power by deterring and ritually binding an aggressor, rather than curing a physical illness.
