Soma Pavamāna

This Soma Pavamāna hymn praises the purified Soma as a growing, luminous power that impels the “shining thought of Ṛta” and makes the sacrifice advance. Soma is portrayed as beloved and all-pervading, harmonizing the gods under one law (vrata) and opening the “pen of heaven,” releasing light and order into the ritual and the world.
Mantra 1
क्राणा शिशुर्महीनां हिन्वन्नृतस्य दीधितिम् । विश्वा परि प्रिया भुवदध द्विता ॥
Growing, the child of the great ones impels the shining thought of Ṛta; encompassing all, he becomes the beloved—then again and again establishing the delight of right order in the being.
Mantra 2
उप त्रितस्य पाष्योरभक्त यद्गुहा पदम् । यज्ञस्य सप्त धामभिरध प्रियम् ॥
He has taken his place near the two sides of Trita—there where the secret seat lies hidden in the cave; then, by the seven powers/abodes of the sacrifice, he becomes the beloved (delight) within the work.
Mantra 3
त्रीणि त्रितस्य धारया पृष्ठेष्वेरया रयिम् । मिमीते अस्य योजना वि सुक्रतुः ॥
With his stream he sets in motion the wealth upon the heights of Trita—threefold; the one of luminous will measures out his linkings and extensions in their right order.
Mantra 4
जज्ञानं सप्त मातरो वेधामशासत श्रिये । अयं ध्रुवो रयीणां चिकेत यत् ॥
When he was born, the seven Mothers set the Knower to the work of splendor; this one becomes the stable foundation of the riches when he awakens to that truth.
Mantra 5
अस्य व्रते सजोषसो विश्वे देवासो अद्रुहः । स्पार्हा भवन्ति रन्तयो जुषन्त यत् ॥
In his law of working, all the gods become of one accord, without hostility; the desirous joys grow full, and they consent to him when that (right order) is established.
Mantra 6
यमी गर्भमृतावृधो दृशे चारुमजीजनन् । कविं मंहिष्ठमध्वरे पुरुस्पृहम् ॥
Him they brought to birth as a wombed power—growers of the Truth—beautiful to behold: the seer, most bountiful in the sacrifice, desired by many.
Mantra 7
समीचीने अभि त्मना यह्वी ऋतस्य मातरा । तन्वाना यज्ञमानुषग्यदञ्जते ॥
The two mighty Mothers of Truth, facing each other, move by their own self-force; extending the sacrifice in the human course, they anoint/prepare it for that (divine working).
Mantra 8
क्रत्वा शुक्रेभिरक्षभिॠणोरप व्रजं दिवः । हिन्वन्नृतस्य दीधितिं प्राध्वरे ॥
By the power of will, with the bright ‘eyes’, he opens the pen of heaven; driving forward the shining thought of Truth, he makes it advance in the sacrifice.
The deity is Soma Pavamāna—Soma as he is being purified and flowing through the filter during the soma ritual.
It means Soma energizes truth-aligned inspiration (ṛta) so that clear insight and right order become active in the mind and in the sacrifice.
