Soma Pavamāna (Soma in the act of purification/flowing); with Indra as recipient
Gāyatrī (3 pādas × 8 syllables)
This opening hymn of the Soma Pavamāna book invokes Soma as he is pressed and strained, asking him to flow in a supremely sweet, exhilarating stream for Indra’s drinking. The verses trace Soma’s purification through the filter, his clarification into luminous potency, and the resulting surge of Indra’s victorious power that breaks obstacles (vṛtra) and brings abundance.
Mantra 1
स्वादिष्ठया मदिष्ठया पवस्व सोम धारया । इन्द्राय पातवे सुतः ॥
Flow out, O Soma, pressed into being, in the most sweet and most rapturous stream—so that Indra, the inner lord of luminous power, may drink and grow in his victorious might within us.
Mantra 2
रक्षोहा विश्वचर्षणिरभि योनिमयोहतम् । द्रुणा सधस्थमासदत् ॥
Slayer of the dark devourers, belonging to all peoples, he takes his seat upon the womb—firm as if smitten into iron—establishing himself on the common foundation: the secure base where the purified delight can work without obstruction.
Mantra 3
वरिवोधातमो भव मंहिष्ठो वृत्रहन्तमः । पर्षि राधो मघोनाम् ॥
Become for us the best establisher of wide space; be the most bountiful, the most puissant slayer of the obstructer. Carry across to us the riches of the givers—those inner plenitudes that sustain the soul’s journey.
Mantra 4
अभ्यर्ष महानां देवानां वीतिमन्धसा । अभि वाजमुत श्रवः ॥
Flow toward the banquet of the great gods with thy pressed delight; flow too toward vāja—plenitude of force—and toward śravas—luminous fame that is the soul’s widening recognition in the Truth.
Mantra 5
त्वामच्छा चरामसि तदिदर्थं दिवेदिवे । इन्दो त्वे न आशसः ॥
To thee we move again and again, day after day, for this very aim: O Indu, in thee are our hopes—our will to the delight that fulfills the journey of consciousness.
Mantra 6
पुनाति ते परिस्रुतं सोमं सूर्यस्य दुहिता । वारेण शश्वता तना ॥
The Daughter of the Sun purifies thy Soma as it streams around—by the eternal water-sieve of her being: the luminous discriminating power that strains the delight into clear truth.
Mantra 7
तमीमण्वीः समर्य आ गृभ्णन्ति योषणो दश । स्वसारः पार्ये दिवि ॥
Him the subtle-moving maidens seize and draw near in the common movement—ten sisters in the farther heaven: the many harmonizing powers that take hold of Soma and prepare his ascent in us.
Mantra 8
तमीं हिन्वन्त्यग्रुवो धमन्ति बाकुरं दृतिम् । त्रिधातु वारणं मधु ॥
Him the unwearied ones impel; they blow the skin-bag that holds the essence—honey guarded in threefold order: delight stabilized in triple foundation for the work of transformation.
Mantra 9
अभीममघ्न्या उत श्रीणन्ति धेनवः शिशुम् । सोममिन्द्राय पातवे ॥
Around him the unharmable cows, the nourishing streams, mix and enrich the child—this Soma—for Indra to drink: the rays of knowledge feed the growing delight until the lord of power can take it fully.
Mantra 10
अस्येदिन्द्रो मदेष्वा विश्वा वृत्राणि जिघ्नते । शूरो मघा च मंहते ॥
By this Soma’s ecstasies Indra indeed smites all obstructions; the Hero grows in might and in bounties—power and plenitude increasing together when delight is purified and received.
It means Soma “as he is being purified/flowing clear” through the filter after pressing. The hymn praises this clarified Soma while it streams and becomes fit to offer.
Indra is the main drinker of Soma in many rites. The hymn says Soma’s purified exhilaration strengthens Indra, enabling him to overcome obstacles (vṛtra) and support prosperity.
It is a poetic image for a luminous purifying agency—often understood as the bright, discriminating power associated with the filtering/clarifying process (and sometimes linked with dawn-like radiance). It expresses how Soma is refined into clear, truthful potency.
