Sukta 99

Mantra 1

त्वामिदा ह्यो नरोऽपीप्यन्वज्रिन्भूर्णयः । स इन्द्र स्तोमवाहसामिह श्रुध्युप स्वसरमा गहि ॥

Even yesterday the men, O wielder of the thunderbolt, made thee increase in delight and power. Therefore, O Indra, hearken here to those who bear the hymns and come near to the call, come hither.

Mantra 2

मत्स्वा सुशिप्र हरिवस्तदीमहे त्वे आ भूषन्ति वेधसः । तव श्रवांस्युपमान्युक्थ्या सुतेष्विन्द्र गिर्वणः ॥

Rejoice in ecstasy, O fair-lipped one, O lord of the tawny steeds; that we seek—upon thee the wise set their adorning thought. Thy glories, worthy of proclamation, are uplifted in the pressed Soma, O Indra, delighting in the hymn.

Mantra 3

श्रायन्त इव सूर्यं विश्वेदिन्द्रस्य भक्षत । वसूनि जाते जनमान ओजसा प्रति भागं न दीधिम ॥

As if leaning toward the Sun, may all powers partake of Indra’s nourishment; and may we, by the strength that is born and ever being born, hold fast our rightful share of the luminous riches.

Mantra 4

अनर्शरातिं वसुदामुप स्तुहि भद्रा इन्द्रस्य रातयः । सो अस्य कामं विधतो न रोषति मनो दानाय चोदयन् ॥

Praise near the Giver of riches whose giving does not fail; auspicious are Indra’s bestowals. He is not angered with the worshipper who orders his will rightly, urging the mind forward toward the act of giving.

Mantra 5

त्वमिन्द्र प्रतूर्तिष्वभि विश्वा असि स्पृधः । अशस्तिहा जनिता विश्वतूरसि त्वं तूर्य तरुष्यतः ॥

You, O Indra, in the forward rushes are the conqueror against all assailing resistances; slayer of the ill-speaking negation, creator and all-overcoming, you are the victorious helper of the one who strives to cross beyond.

Mantra 6

अनु ते शुष्मं तुरयन्तमीयतुः क्षोणी शिशुं न मातरा । विश्वास्ते स्पृधः श्नथयन्त मन्यवे वृत्रं यदिन्द्र तूर्वसि ॥

Following your rushing might, the two worlds move as two mothers after a child. All the opposing pressures are shattered for your wrathful force, when you, O Indra, overpower Vṛtra.

Mantra 7

इत ऊती वो अजरं प्रहेतारमप्रहितम् । आशुं जेतारं हेतारं रथीतममतूर्तं तुग्र्यावृधम् ॥

From here we call for your help—Indra, the undecaying impeller, unthwarted; swift victor, smiter, most chariot-mighty, unconquered, increaser of the onward-rushing force.

Mantra 8

इष्कर्तारमनिष्कृतं सहस्कृतं शतमूतिं शतक्रतुम् । समानमिन्द्रमवसे हवामहे वसवानं वसूजुवम् ॥

We call for help Indra the fashioner of the right issue, unperverted, made of force; of a hundred succors, of a hundred workings—this same Indra we invoke for protection, rich in plenitude and driving us toward the true riches.
