Sukta 82

Mantra 1

इन्द्रावरुणा युवमध्वराय नो विशे जनाय महि शर्म यच्छतम् । दीर्घप्रयज्युमति यो वनुष्यति वयं जयेम पृतनासु दूढ्यः ॥

O Indra and Varuṇa, grant to our sacrifice, to our people and community, a vast peace and protection. Overcoming the long-drawn adversary who strives against us, may we win the battles, firmly held in your sustaining might.

Mantra 2

सम्राळन्यः स्वराळन्य उच्यते वां महान्ताविन्द्रावरुणा महावसू । विश्वे देवासः परमे व्योमनि सं वामोजो वृषणा सं बलं दधुः ॥

One of you is called the universal king, the other the self-king: you two are great, Indra and Varuṇa, the great givers of substance. All the gods in the highest heaven have set together in you, O two strong bulls, the joined force and the joined power.

Mantra 3

अन्वपां खान्यतृन्तमोजसा सूर्यमैरयतं दिवि प्रभुम् । इन्द्रावरुणा मदे अस्य मायिनोऽपिन्वतमपितः पिन्वतं धियः ॥

Following the courses of the waters you cleft the channels by your might; you set the Sun, the lordly light, in heaven. O Indra and Varuṇa, in the ecstasy of this master of powers, you made the inspirations swell from the hidden depth; make our thoughts too increase.

Mantra 4

युवामिद्युत्सु पृतनासु वह्नयो युवां क्षेमस्य प्रसवे मितज्ञवः । ईशाना वस्व उभयस्य कारव इन्द्रावरुणा सुहवा हवामहे ॥

It is you two whom the carriers of the flame call in battles; it is you whom the measured knowers invoke for the bringing-forth of peace. Masters of both kinds of wealth, the singers call you, O Indra and Varuṇa, easy to invoke.

Mantra 5

इन्द्रावरुणा यदिमानि चक्रथुर्विश्वा जातानि भुवनस्य मज्मना । क्षेमेण मित्रो वरुणं दुवस्यति मरुद्भिरुग्रः शुभमन्य ईयते ॥

O Indra and Varuṇa, since you have fashioned all these births of the world by your vast greatness: by peace Mitra serves Varuṇa, and the other, the fierce one, with the Maruts moves toward the shining good.

Mantra 6

महे शुल्काय वरुणस्य नु त्विष ओजो मिमाते ध्रुवमस्य यत्स्वम् । अजामिमन्यः श्नथयन्तमातिरद्दभ्रेभिरन्यः प्र वृणोति भूयसः ॥

Now, for the great splendor of Varuṇa, his firm, own might measures itself out in radiance. The other strikes down the one who would not yield; and the other chooses, from the small, the greater increase.

Mantra 7

न तमंहो न दुरितानि मर्त्यमिन्द्रावरुणा न तपः कुतश्चन । यस्य देवा गच्छथो वीथो अध्वरं न तं मर्तस्य नशते परिह्वृतिः ॥

No distress, no wrong movements, no burning affliction can touch the mortal, O Indra and Varuṇa, from any side—when you, O gods, travel with him on the path of the sacrifice. The enclosing distortion cannot seize that mortal.

Mantra 8

अर्वाङ्नरा दैव्येनावसा गतं शृणुतं हवं यदि मे जुजोषथः । युवोर्हि सख्यमुत वा यदाप्यं मार्डीकमिन्द्रावरुणा नि यच्छतम् ॥

Come hither, O two divine heroes, by your godhead’s help; hear my call, if you accept it. For yours is the friendship, and yours too the water-born mercy—O Indra and Varuṇa, set that healing grace within us.

Mantra 9

अस्माकमिन्द्रावरुणा भरेभरे पुरोयोधा भवतं कृष्ट्योजसा । यद्वां हवन्त उभये अध स्पृधि नरस्तोकस्य तनयस्य सातिषु ॥

O Indra and Varuṇa, in every onset be our champions in front, by the strength that upholds the people. When both sides call upon you, then win for us, O heroes, in the victories for our child and our offspring.

Mantra 10

अस्मे इन्द्रो वरुणो मित्रो अर्यमा द्युम्नं यच्छन्तु महि शर्म सप्रथः । अवध्रं ज्योतिरदितेॠतावृधो देवस्य श्लोकं सवितुर्मनामहे ॥

In us may Indra, Varuṇa, Mitra, and Aryaman establish the luminous power and the vast, wide-spreading peace. We seek to hold the unbroken Light of Aditi—those who increase the Ṛta—and we meditate on the divine Word/renown of Savitṛ that awakens the mind to the Truth.
