This hymn invokes Agni as Vaiśvānara—the universal fire who moves between Heaven and Earth and grows through the vigilance of the awakened worshippers. It praises him as the lord of peoples and the luminous sign of dawn and day, then petitions him for abundant wealth, famed strength (vāja), and wide protection in harmony with the Rudras and Vasus.
Mantra 1
प्राग्नये तवसे भरध्वं गिरं दिवो अरतये पृथिव्याः । यो विश्वेषाममृतानामुपस्थे वैश्वानरो वावृधे जागृवद्भिः ॥
Bring forward the word to Agni the strong, the mover of heaven and earth; he who in the lap of all the immortals, as Vaiśvānara, grows by the wakeful ones—by those who keep the inner fire vigilant.
Mantra 2
पृष्टो दिवि धाय्यग्निः पृथिव्यां नेता सिन्धूनां वृषभः स्तियानाम् । स मानुषीरभि विशो वि भाति वैश्वानरो वावृधानो वरेण ॥
Established aloft in the luminous heaven, Agni is set; on earth he becomes the Leader of the currents and the strong Bull of the firm foundations. He shines out over the human peoples—Vaiśvānara, increasing by the chosen excellence, widening the field of the soul’s light.
Mantra 3
त्वद्भिया विश आयन्नसिक्नीरसमना जहतीर्भोजनानि । वैश्वानर पूरवे शोशुचानः पुरो यदग्ने दरयन्नदीदेः ॥
By thy dread power the peoples moved; the dark and discordant forces abandoned their enjoyments. O Vaiśvānara, flaming for Pūru, when thou didst rend the strongholds, O Agni, thou didst blaze forth—clearing the way for the soul’s rightful habitation.
Mantra 4
तव त्रिधातु पृथिवी उत द्यौर्वैश्वानर व्रतमग्ने सचन्त । त्वं भासा रोदसी आ ततन्थाजस्रेण शोचिषा शोशुचानः ॥
Thy threefold-ordered law, O Vaiśvānara, is followed by Earth and Heaven. With thy light thou hast stretched out the two worlds, blazing with unceasing flame—establishing the wide frame for the soul’s true order.
Mantra 5
त्वामग्ने हरितो वावशाना गिरः सचन्ते धुनयो घृताचीः । पतिं कृष्टीनां रथ्यं रयीणां वैश्वानरमुषसां केतुमह्नाम् ॥
To thee, O Agni, the eager bright energies and the ghee-bright utterances press near. Thou art the Lord of the peoples, the chariot-path of the plenitudes, Vaiśvānara—token of the Dawns and of the Days, the sign of awakening in us.
Mantra 6
त्वे असुर्यं वसवो न्यृण्वन्क्रतुं हि ते मित्रमहो जुषन्त । त्वं दस्यूँरोकसो अग्न आज उरु ज्योतिर्जनयन्नार्याय ॥
In thee the Vasus set the sovereign might; for thy will of action the great-friended powers take delight. Thou drivest out the Dasyus from their seats, O Agni the racer, bringing into birth a wide Light for the Arya— for the soul that chooses the upward law.
Mantra 7
स जायमानः परमे व्योमन्वायुर्न पाथः परि पासि सद्यः । त्वं भुवना जनयन्नभि क्रन्नपत्याय जातवेदो दशस्यन् ॥
He, being born in the highest wideness, guards the path at once like the Wind that moves everywhere. Thou bringest the worlds to birth and pressest forward, O Jātavedas, serving the growth of the offspring—nurturing the soul’s continuance in the light.
Mantra 8
तामग्ने अस्मे इषमेरयस्व वैश्वानर द्युमतीं जातवेदः । यया राधः पिन्वसि विश्ववार पृथु श्रवो दाशुषे मर्त्याय ॥
That food of force, O Agni, set in motion for us—O Vaiśvānara, Jātavedas, rich in light; by which thou increasest the plenitude, O giver of all desirable things, and grantest wide fame to the mortal who offers—spreading the soul’s effective abundance.
Mantra 9
तं नो अग्ने मघवद्भ्यः पुरुक्षुं रयिं नि वाजं श्रुत्यं युवस्व । वैश्वानर महि नः शर्म यच्छ रुद्रेभिरग्ने वसुभिः सजोषाः ॥
For us, O Agni, yoke in a rich plenitude—abundant in increase—for the bountiful; and a vāja that is heard of, a forceful fullness. O Vaiśvānara, grant us great peace and shelter, together with the Rudras and the Vasus in one accord—establishing a protected wideness for the journey.
Vaiśvānara is Agni as the ‘universal’ fire—present for all peoples, active in the sacrifice, and shining as the sign of dawn and the daily awakening.
It means Agni is strengthened when people keep the ritual fire and the inner fire of attention awake—through steady offering, truthful speech, and alert consciousness.
It asks for rayi (prosperity and resources), vāja (renowned strength/victory), and mahi śarma (great shelter and peace), with protective support from the Rudras and Vasus.
