Sukta 38

Sukta 7.38

Rishi

Vasiṣṭha (traditional for RV 7.38)

Devata

Savitar (with Bhaga as associated distributor)

Chandas

Triṣṭubh (probable; not explicitly provided in input)

This hymn invokes Savitar as the divine Impeller who raises and sets in motion the “golden thought,” awakening right intention, movement, and auspicious beginnings. Bhaga is remembered as the distributor of portions, asked to apportion wealth and well-being, while allied powers of Heaven and Earth are invited for protection and increase. The sukta culminates in a soma-like gladness: the truth-knowing immortal powers are urged to drink the honeyed essence and proceed on the devayāna (godward) paths.

Mantras

Mantra 1

Up has gone this god Savitar, setting in motion the golden thought which he has made to flow. Now Bhaga, to be invoked by men, distributes the treasures—he who carries many riches within his being.

Mantra 2

Rise up, O Savitar; hear this—O golden-handed—at the forward bearing of the Truth. Wide you release the vast earth and the unbounded thought, bringing to men the nourishment that supports the mortal journey.

Mantra 3

May Savitar indeed be the god praised—whom even all the Vasus sing. May he establish for us our hymns and our acts of reverence, and with all his guardianships protect our illumined leaders and seekers.

Mantra 4

Him whom the goddess Aditi sings—embracing the impulsion of the god Savitar—him Varuṇa the sovereign praises, and Mitra and Aryaman together in one accord. Thus the powers of Truth uphold the solar impeller within us.

Mantra 5

May those powers who strive together and press forward toward the gift—companions of the giving from Heaven and from Earth—come close to us. May Ahi Budhnya, the Serpent of the deep foundation, listen to us; and may the protecting Power (Varūtrī), with her single-streaming milch-cows of abundance, guard us from below and all around.

Mantra 6

Following that (right movement), may Jāspati shape for us the treasure, advancing in the way of the god Savitṛ. The strong one calls Bhaga for our help; and when Bhaga comes with his favor, then indeed the treasure arrives.

Mantra 7

May the strong ones be for our good in our calls—god-nurtured, measured in their onset, bearers of the sun-bright light. Crushing the serpent-force and the wolfish devourer and the hostile powers, with one wheel-rim of unity may they drive far from us the afflictions.

Mantra 8

In every surge of plenitude, help us, O powers of vāja, in our gains—O seers, deathless, knowers of the Truth-Order. Drink of this honeyed essence and grow glad; satisfied, travel by the godward paths (the inner ways of ascent and descent).

Frequently Asked Questions

Savitar is the main deity—the divine Impeller who awakens and sets all things in motion. Bhaga appears closely with him as the power that distributes a rightful share of wealth and good fortune.

It asks for an awakened, luminous intention (the “golden thought”) and for prosperity that is rightly apportioned. Along with wealth, it also seeks protection and safe guidance on the divine path of the sacrifice and life.

Traditionally it suits dawn recitation or the opening of a rite to invoke clarity, auspicious beginnings, and well-being. In a simple practice, one may recite with an intention for right action, offer a small ghee lamp or water, and conclude with a wish for protection and generous sharing.
