This hymn of Atri calls the Maruts—Rudra’s sons, “Indra-endowed”—to arrive in unified splendor on golden chariots and grant well-being. It praises their radiant, storm-like power and their generous, unclouded gifts, presenting them as guardians of ṛta (cosmic order) who hear truth and uplift the singer’s prayer.

Mantra 1

आ रुद्रास इन्द्रवन्तः सजोषसो हिरण्यरथाः सुविताय गन्तन । इयं वो अस्मत्प्रति हर्यते मतिस्तृष्णजे न दिव उत्सा उदन्यवे ॥

Come, O Rudra-sons, rich in Indra’s might, in one accord, on golden chariots, for our well-being. This our thought turns eagerly toward you—like springs from heaven toward the thirsty seeker of water.

Mantra 2

वाशीमन्त ऋष्टिमन्तो मनीषिणः सुधन्वान इषुमन्तो निषङ्गिणः । स्वश्वाः स्थ सुरथाः पृश्निमातरः स्वायुधा मरुतो याथना शुभम् ॥

With axes, with spears—wise in thought; with good bows, with arrows, with quivers: you are well-horsed, well-charioted, O Maruts, children of Pṛśni. Armed with your own powers, move on toward auspiciousness and luminous good.

धूनुथ द्यां पर्वतान्दाशुषे वसु नि वो वना जिहते यामनो भिया । कोपयथ पृथिवीं पृश्निमातरः शुभे यदुग्राः पृषतीरयुग्ध्वम् ॥

You, the Maruts, shake the heaven and the firm-set mountains; for the giver you set down the Vasus (rich powers). The forests bend down in the fear of your onrush. You stir the Earth, O sons of Pr̥śni, when, mighty for the work of a luminous going, you yoke your dappled steeds.

Mantra 4

वातत्विषो मरुतो वर्षनिर्णिजो यमा इव सुसदृशः सुपेशसः । पिशङ्गाश्वा अरुणाश्वा अरेपसः प्रत्वक्षसो महिना द्यौरिवोरवः ॥

The Maruts are bright with wind’s force, clothed in rain; like twin powers they are harmonious and beautifully formed. With tawny steeds, with ruddy steeds, flawless, strong-limbed—by greatness they are wide-voiced like Heaven itself.

पुरुद्रप्सा अञ्जिमन्तः सुदानवस्त्वेषसंदृशो अनवभ्रराधसः । सुजातासो जनुषा रुक्मवक्षसो दिवो अर्का अमृतं नाम भेजिरे ॥

Abundant in shining drops, brilliant in their adornment, generous, fierce to behold, with unclouded bounty; well-born by their very birth, with golden breasts—they are hymns of Heaven, and they have taken to themselves the immortal Name.

ऋष्टयो वो मरुतो अंसयोरधि सह ओजो बाह्वोर्वो बलं हितम् । नृम्णा शीर्षस्वायुधा रथेषु वो विश्वा वः श्रीरधि तनूषु पिपिशे ॥

Your spears, O Maruts, are upon your shoulders; might and energy are set in your arms, your strength is established. By heroic force your weapons are on your heads; on your chariots and in your bodies every splendor of yours is fashioned and increased.

Mantra 7

गोमदश्वावद्रथवत्सुवीरं चन्द्रवद्राधो मरुतो ददा नः । प्रशस्तिं नः कृणुत रुद्रियासो भक्षीय वोऽवसो दैव्यस्य ॥

Give us, O Maruts, a boon rich in light-cows, rich in swift energies, rich in ordered movements, rich in heroic sons—shining like the moon. Make for us a praiseworthy path, O Rudra-born ones, that we may partake of your divine protection.

Mantra 8

हये नरो मरुतो मृळता नस्तुवीमघासो अमृता ऋतज्ञाः । सत्यश्रुतः कवयो युवानो बृहद्गिरयो बृहदुक्षमाणाः ॥

Come, O heroes, O Maruts—be gracious to us, you of mighty giving, immortal, knowers of the Right. Hearers of the Truth, seers, ever-young, of vast song—pouring out the Vast (the bṛhat) in your increase.

Frequently Asked Questions

They are a band of youthful storm-deities, called Rudra’s sons, who ride together in brilliance and bring wind, thunder, and rain. In this hymn they are also described as sharing Indra’s strength.

It asks them to come in harmony for the worshipper’s well-being, to be gracious and protective, and to grant life-giving abundance—often understood as rain, strength, and successful passage through difficulties.
