Sukta 5.4
Atri (Ātreya tradition) (traditional ascription for RV 5.4)
Agni
Trishtubh (probable; needs metrical verification)
This hymn of the Ātreya tradition praises Agni as vasupati (lord of treasures) and the kingly power presiding over sacrifice, invoked with joy in the adhvara. It asks Agni to intensify vāja (victorious energy and plenitude), secure triumph amid human conflicts, and establish in the worshipper a “pleasant world-room” (syona loka) together with broad prosperity—sons, strength, cattle, and well-being.
Mantra 1
You, O Agni, lord of the riches of being, I invoke with delight in the offerings, O king. By you, increasing the vāja (plenitude of force), may we conquer; may we become overcomers of the mortal battle-pressures.
Mantra 4
Accept, O Agni, with Iḷā in one accord, striving with the rays of the Sun. Accept our kindling, O knower of births; and bring the gods here for the eating of the offering—today, into our work.
Mantra 5
O Agni, made glad and at home in the dwelling, the knowing Guest—come near to this our sacrifice. Having struck down all who press upon us in hostility, bring to us the enjoyments: the nourishings and plenitudes that sustain the inner being.
Mantra 6
By thy slaying force drive forth and shatter the Dasyu within us; fashion wide room and free flight for our own embodied being. Since thou upholdest the gods, O son of Might, therefore, O Agni, protect us—O best leader of men—in the plenitude of force.
Mantra 7
We serve thee, O Agni, with uplifted words; we serve thee with offerings, O Purifier of happy flame. In us increase the rayi that is desirable in all ways; in us place all the riches—every inward possession of the Truth.
Mantra 8
Accept, O Agni, our path of offering—O son of Might, who abidest in the triple seat—accept the oblation. May we be doers of the good among the gods; guard us with thy peace, with thy threefold sheltering protection.
Mantra 9
All our hard passages, O Jātavedas, carry us across beyond the distress, as a boat crosses the river. O Agni, praised with obeisance like Atri, awaken as the protector of our embodied lives.
Mantra 10
He who, being mortal, calls thee the Immortal with heart and with the singing word—O Jātavedas, place in us the glory of the true becoming; and with the powers of begetting, O Agni, may we attain immortality.
Mantra 11
For whom thou, O Jātavedas, makest a happy world-room, O Agni, because he is a doer of the good—he attains, in well-being, the swift moving force, the power of sons, the heroic strength, the light-cows, and the rayi: the plenitude of being.
It praises Agni as the ruling power of sacrifice and asks him to bring victory-energy (vāja), prosperity (rayi), and protection, so the worshipper can thrive with well-being (svasti).
“Vasupati” means “lord of treasures.” The hymn treats Agni as the power that governs and distributes riches—both material wealth and inner strength—through the sacrificial order.
It means a pleasant, secure “space” or “world-room.” The idea is that Agni establishes a safe and auspicious condition of life for the person who performs good actions and worships rightly.
