This hymn to Indra frames the Soma-sacrifice across its pressings, inviting him especially at dawn and again at midday to accept the prepared foods and the poet’s praise. It asks that the offerings (grains, cakes, and hymn) become “effective/beautiful” and that Indra’s heroic force increase day by day for Soma-drinking and victory.

Mantra 1

धानावन्तं करम्भिणमपूपवन्तमुक्थिनम् । इन्द्र प्रातर्जुषस्व नः ॥

O Indra, in the early awakening, accept from us the offerings that carry the grains of force, the well-mixed nourishment, the cakes of plenitude, and the hymn that bears the power of utterance—receive them and make them active in our being.

Mantra 2

पुरोळाशं पचत्यं जुषस्वेन्द्रा गुरस्व च । तुभ्यं हव्यानि सिस्रते ॥

Accept, O Indra, the well-cooked puroḷāśa that is being prepared; come near and make it your delight. For to you the offerings stream forth, seeking your power of fulfillment.

Mantra 3

पुरोळाशं च नो घसो जोषयासे गिरश्च नः । वधूयुरिव योषणाम् ॥

You take delight in our shaped offering and in our nourishing substance; you take delight also in our words—like a bridegroom drawn toward the bride, you are drawn toward the soul’s powers that seek union.

Mantra 4

पुरोळाशं सनश्रुत प्रातःसावे जुषस्व नः । इन्द्र क्रतुर्हि ते बृहन् ॥

O Indra, famed from of old, accept our puroḷāśa at the morning pressing; for vast indeed is your kratu—your effective will and luminous intelligence that orders the work.

Mantra 5

माध्यंदिनस्य सवनस्य धानाः पुरोळाशमिन्द्र कृष्वेह चारुम् । प्र यत्स्तोता जरिता तूर्ण्यर्थो वृषायमाण उप गीर्भिरीट्टे ॥

For the midday pressing, make here, O Indra, the grains and the puroḷāśa become beautiful and effective; for when the praising singer, swift in his aim, comes forward, pressing on like a bull-force, he draws near and worships you with words that carry vision.

Mantra 6

तृतीये धानाः सवने पुरुष्टुत पुरोळाशमाहुतं मामहस्व नः । ऋभुमन्तं वाजवन्तं त्वा कवे प्रयस्वन्त उप शिक्षेम धीतिभिः ॥

In the third pressing, O much-praised one, accept the grains and the offered puroḷāśa and magnify us. O poet-power, rich in skilful formation and plenitude of force, may we, bringing our prepared energies, learn to approach you by luminous discernments.

Mantra 7

पूषण्वते ते चकृमा करम्भं हरिवते हर्यश्वाय धानाः । अपूपमद्धि सगणो मरुद्भिः सोमं पिब वृत्रहा शूर विद्वान् ॥

For you who are full of fostering power, we have made the mixed nourishment; for you the lord of the bright steeds we have prepared the grains. Eat the formed cake with your host, with the Maruts; drink the Soma, O slayer of obstruction, O hero who knows the way of victory.

प्रति धाना भरत तूयमस्मै पुरोळाशं वीरतमाय नृणाम् । दिवेदिवे सदृशीरिन्द्र तुभ्यं वर्धन्तु त्वा सोमपेयाय धृष्णो ॥

Bring forth quickly the grains and the shaped offering for him, the most heroic among men. Day by day, O Indra, may the fitting powers grow for you; may they increase you for the drinking of Soma, O impetuous one, until your force stands complete against all resistance.
