This hymn proclaims Indra’s “true deeds of the True”: after drinking Soma he smites the obstructing serpent (Ahi/Vṛtra) and releases the pent-up powers of life—waters, light, and victorious movement. It is both praise and invocation, urging Indra to repeat these world-ordering acts for the worshippers, granting protection, spoils, and heroic strength in the assembly.

Mantra 1

प्र घा न्वस्य महतो महानि सत्या सत्यस्य करणानि वोचम् । त्रिकद्रुकेष्वपिबत्सुतस्यास्य मदे अहिमिन्द्रो जघान ॥

Now I proclaim the great works of the Great One—true acts of the Truth. Drinking the pressed Soma in the threefold cup-places, in that ecstasy Indra smote the Serpent of obstruction.

अवंशे द्यामस्तभायद्बृहन्तमा रोदसी अपृणदन्तरिक्षम् । स धारयत्पृथिवीं पप्रथच्च सोमस्य ता मद इन्द्रश्चकार ॥

He propped the vast heaven; he filled the two worlds and the mid-region. He held firm the earth and spread it wide—these Indra accomplished in the ecstasy of Soma.

Mantra 3

सद्मेव प्राचो वि मिमाय मानैर्वज्रेण खान्यतृणन्नदीनाम् । वृथासृजत्पथिभिर्दीर्घयाथैः सोमस्य ता मद इन्द्रश्चकार ॥

As if laying out a dwelling, he measured out the forward spaces by measures; with the thunder-force he pierced open the channels of the rivers. He sent them forth along paths of long journey—these Indra accomplished in the ecstasy of Soma.

स प्रवोळ्हॄन्परिगत्या दभीतेर्विश्वमधागायुधमिद्धे अग्नौ । सं गोभिरश्वैरसृजद्रथेभिः सोमस्य ता मद इन्द्रश्चकार ॥

He went round the ‘carriers’ of the offering from fear and burned up every weapon in the kindled fire. Then he set together the powers of light and speed—cows, horses, and chariots—these Indra accomplished in the ecstasy of Soma.

स ईं महीं धुनिमेतोररम्णात्सो अस्नातॄनपारयत्स्वस्ति । त उत्स्नाय रयिमभि प्र तस्थुः सोमस्य ता मद इन्द्रश्चकार ॥

He checked the great rushing (torrent) of the foe; he carried the swimmers safely across to well-being. Then, having bathed, they stood forth towards the treasure—these Indra accomplished in the ecstasy of Soma.

सोदञ्चं सिन्धुमरिणान्महित्वा वज्रेणान उषसः सं पिपेष । अजवसो जविनीभिर्विवृश्चन्त्सोमस्य ता मद इन्द्रश्चकार ॥

He turned the Sindhu upward by his greatness; with the thunder-force he crushed the carts of the Dawn. Cutting through the un-hasty with swift ones—these Indra accomplished in the ecstasy of Soma.

स विद्वाँ अपगोहं कनीनामाविर्भवन्नुदतिष्ठत्परावृक् । प्रति श्रोणः स्थाद्व्यनगचष्ट सोमस्य ता मद इन्द्रश्चकार ॥

Knowing the hidden place where the young lights are concealed, he became manifest and rose up from the far turning. Standing opposite, the Strong One looked out and saw distinctly—these Indra accomplished in the ecstasy of Soma.

Mantra 8

भिनद्वलमङ्गिरोभिर्गृणानो वि पर्वतस्य दृंहितान्यैरत् । रिणग्रोधांसि कृत्रिमाण्येषां सोमस्य ता मद इन्द्रश्चकार ॥

Praising with the Angiras powers, he broke open Vala; he drove apart the compacted fastnesses of the mountain. He shattered their artificial obstructions and barriers; these deeds Indra wrought in the ecstasy of Soma.

Mantra 9

स्वप्नेनाभ्युप्या चुमुरिं धुनिं च जघन्थ दस्युं प्र दभीतिमावः । रम्भी चिदत्र विविदे हिरण्यं सोमस्य ता मद इन्द्रश्चकार ॥

By the power of dream-vision, coming upon them, thou didst smite Cumuri and Dhuni; thou didst deliver Dabhīti from the Dasyu. Even Rambhī here found the hidden gold: these works Indra accomplished in the rapture of Soma.

Mantra 10

नूनं सा ते प्रति वरं जरित्रे दुहीयदिन्द्र दक्षिणा मघोनी । शिक्षा स्तोतृभ्यो माति धग्भगो नो बृहद्वदेम विदथे सुवीराः ॥

Now may that bounteous Dakṣiṇā yield back to thee her choicest gift for the singer, O Indra. Teach us; let not our portion be diminished—may we speak the Vast in the assembly, rich in heroic powers.

Frequently Asked Questions
