Sukta 47

Mantra 1

जगृभ्मा ते दक्षिणमिन्द्र हस्तं वसूयवो वसुपते वसूनाम् । विद्मा हि त्वा गोपतिं शूर गोनामस्मभ्यं चित्रं वृषणं रयिं दाः ॥

We have grasped your right hand, O Indra—O lord of treasures, we who seek the riches of being. For we know you as the strong guardian of the Rays (cows). Give to us a varied, virile plenitude (rayi), a wealth that is force and light.

Mantra 2

स्वायुधं स्ववसं सुनीथं चतुःसमुद्रं धरुणं रयीणाम् । चर्कृत्यं शंस्यं भूरिवारमस्मभ्यं चित्रं वृषणं रयिं दाः ॥

Give us the plenitude that is well-armed, self-sufficient, and well-guided; a wealth that holds firm like the four seas, a foundation for many streams of richness. Give what is to be made and built, what is to be proclaimed, abundant in wideness—varied, potent, a rayi of fulfilled being.

Mantra 3

सुब्रह्माणं देववन्तं बृहन्तमुरुं गभीरं पृथुबुध्नमिन्द्र । श्रुतऋषिमुग्रमभिमातिषाहमस्मभ्यं चित्रं वृषणं रयिं दाः ॥

Give us the plenitude that is rich in mantra and divine, vast and wide, deep and broad-based, O Indra; that listens to the seer, fierce against the assailing thoughts, conquering the hostile formations—grant to us a varied, potent rayi.

Mantra 4

सनद्वाजं विप्रवीरं तरुत्रं धनस्पृतं शूशुवांसं सुदक्षम् । दस्युहनं पूर्भिदमिन्द्र सत्यमस्मभ्यं चित्रं वृषणं रयिं दाः ॥

Give us the ancient plenitude of force (vāja), rich in inspired heroes, a saving power, a wealth-winner, eager and well-skilled; slayer of the dasyu within, breaker of obstructing strongholds, O Indra—true in action—grant to us a varied and potent rayi.

Mantra 5

अश्वावन्तं रथिनं वीरवन्तं सहस्रिणं शतिनं वाजमिन्द्र । भद्रव्रातं विप्रवीरं स्वर्षामस्मभ्यं चित्रं वृषणं रयिं दाः ॥

O Indra, give us the vāja—plenitude of victorious force—rich in steeds and chariots, rich in heroes, a thousandfold and a hundredfold. Give us the radiant, strong rayi, a fullness of being that moves with auspicious laws, carries inspired seers as its strength, and wins the luminous heaven within.

Mantra 6

प्र सप्तगुमृतधीतिं सुमेधां बृहस्पतिं मतिरच्छा जिगाति । य आङ्गिरसो नमसोपसद्योऽस्मभ्यं चित्रं वृषणं रयिं दाः ॥

Forward goes our thought to Bṛhaspati, the seven-cowed, the thinker of ṛta, the luminous intelligence. He, the Aṅgiras, near to whom we sit with adoration—may he give us the radiant and potent rayi, the manifold inner wealth.

Mantra 7

वनीवानो मम दूतास इन्द्रं स्तोमाश्चरन्ति सुमतीरियानाः । हृदिस्पृशो मनसा वच्यमाना अस्मभ्यं चित्रं वृषणं रयिं दाः ॥

My chants, like eager messengers, move toward Indra, traveling by paths of right goodwill. Touching the heart, formed by the mind into speech, may they win for us the radiant and potent rayi, the manifold inner wealth.

Mantra 8

यत्त्वा यामि दद्धि तन्न इन्द्र बृहन्तं क्षयमसमं जनानाम् । अभि तद्द्यावापृथिवी गृणीतामस्मभ्यं चित्रं वृषणं रयिं दाः ॥

What I seek from you—grant that to us, O Indra: a vast dwelling and foundation, unequalled among men. Let Heaven and Earth affirm it; and give us the radiant, potent rayi, the many-formed inner wealth.
