Rishi

unknown (hymn-level attribution varies; needs confirmation from Anukramaṇī)

Devata

Agni (primary), with victory-protection intent

Chandas

Triṣṭubh (probable; requires syllable-count verification)

This hymn is a victory-and-protection prayer centered on Agni as the inner and outer commander of strength (varcas) in conflict, asking that all directions and powers become favorable. It expands from Agni’s lordship to a wider divine coalition—Goddesses, All-Gods, Soma, Indra–Agni, and the divine classes (Vasus, Rudras, Ādityas)—to secure offspring, bodily integrity, and the defeat of rivals.

Mantras

Mantra 1

O Agni, may my luminous force be victorious in the calls of conflict; kindling thee within, may we increase our embodied being. May the four directions bow to me; under thy over-lordship may we win the battles.

Mantra 2

May all the gods be with me in the clash of calls—Maruts with Indra, Vishnu, and Agni. May my mid-world become a wide realm; for me may Vāta blow in this desire (that seeks fulfilment).

Mantra 3

In me may the gods set their plenitude; in me be the benediction, in me the divine calling. May the ancient divine Hotars work for us; may we be unharmed in our embodied being, rich in heroic energies.

Mantra 4

Let the offerings that are mine be offered for me; let the intention of my mind be true. Let no guilt come upon me, not in any way; O all you gods, speak on our behalf and over us (for our right).

Mantra 5

O goddesses, make for us the six broad spaces; O all gods, here make us heroic. Let us not fall away from offspring, nor from our embodied powers; let us not be delivered to the hater, O King Soma.

Mantra 6

O Agni, thrust back the wrath of the others; unfailing guardian, protect us all around. Let the hidden hostile ones turn back; and near thee may their mind be driven apart, their awakenings scattered.

Mantra 7

May Dhātā, lord of the foundations of the world, the divine protector who overcomes hostile assaults; may both Ashvins, and Brihaspati, and the gods guard this sacrifice and the sacrificer from harm and mis-aim.

Mantra 8

May the wide-pervading Mighty One grant us shelter in this call—Indra, invoked by many, increasing many. For our progeny and our becoming, O bright-steeded Indra, be gracious; do not harm us, do not cast us away.

Mantra 9

May those who are our rivals fall away; with Indra and Agni we thrust them down. The Vasus, Rudras, and Ādityas have made the fierce Over-king, the watcher who reaches above (all), for our guarding.

Frequently Asked Questions

It is a protective and victory-oriented hymn: it asks Agni to grant radiant strength (varcas), make all forces favorable, and help the worshipper win conflicts while safeguarding body and offspring.

Agni is the central power and ritual leader, but the hymn gathers a full protective alliance—Devīs, Viśve Devāḥ, Soma, and Indra–Agni—so strength, space, lineage, and defense are secured from every side.

Yes. It can be recited while lighting a lamp or small fire with a ghee offering (if appropriate), focusing on courage, clarity, and protection; the intent is defensive—warding off obstacles and rivalry, not harming others.
