This hymn praises Agni as the auspicious, non-hostile “guest” of the house and the indispensable Hotṛ who carries offerings and blessings between humans and the gods. It asks Agni to release abundant “streams” of wealth and vitality, to be kindled and purified in the sacrificer’s home, and to secure lasting welfare and increase for the yajamānas. The Vasiṣṭha lineage explicitly claims the invocation, placing the hymn within a living family tradition of ritual praise and protection.
Mantra 1
वसुं न चित्रमहसं गृणीषे वामं शेवमतिथिमद्विषेण्यम् । स रासते शुरुधो विश्वधायसोऽग्निर्होता गृहपतिः सुवीर्यम् ॥
I hymn Agni, rich as a treasure, of manifold splendour—benign and desirable, the guest who is without hatred. He gives the impetuous streams of plenitude in every way—Agni the priest of offering, the Lord of the house, bringing the power of a noble heroism.
Mantra 2
जुषाणो अग्ने प्रति हर्य मे वचो विश्वानि विद्वान्वयुनानि सुक्रतो । घृतनिर्णिग्ब्रह्मणे गातुमेरय तव देवा अजनयन्ननु व्रतम् ॥
Delighting, O Agni, receive my word; knowing all the workings, O clear-willed one. Clad in the shining of ghee, set moving for the sacred utterance a path; for the gods were born following your law of action.
Mantra 3
सप्त धामानि परियन्नमर्त्यो दाशद्दाशुषे सुकृते मामहस्व । सुवीरेण रयिणाग्ने स्वाभुवा यस्त आनट् समिधा तं जुषस्व ॥
Moving around the seven abodes, immortal Agni, give to the giver who has done the good work; magnify us. With the rayi that bears noble force, O self-becoming one, accept him who has reached you with the kindling-stick.
Mantra 4
यज्ञस्य केतुं प्रथमं पुरोहितं हविष्मन्त ईळते सप्त वाजिनम् । शृण्वन्तमग्निं घृतपृष्ठमुक्षणं पृणन्तं देवं पृणते सुवीर्यम् ॥
The offerers adore Agni, the first sign and leader of the sacrifice, set in front—the sevenfold winner of plenitude. Hearing us, Agni, with a back of ghee, the strong Bull, the god who fills; he fills the seeker with noble hero-force.
Mantra 5
त्वं दूतः प्रथमो वरेण्यः स हूयमानो अमृताय मत्स्व । त्वां मर्जयन्मरुतो दाशुषो गृहे त्वां स्तोमेभिर्भृगवो वि रुरुचुः ॥
You are the first messenger, worthy of choice; when called, take delight for immortality. The Maruts purify you in the house of the giver; the Bhṛgus make you blaze forth by hymns.
Mantra 6
इषं दुहन्त्सुदुघां विश्वधायसं यज्ञप्रिये यजमानाय सुक्रतो । अग्ने घृतस्नुस्त्रिॠतानि दीद्यद्वर्तिर्यज्ञं परियन्त्सुक्रतूयसे ॥
Milking out nourishment, the well-yielding, all-sustaining abundance for the sacrificer, O lover of the yajña, O clear-willed one. O Agni, dripping with ghee, blazing the triple truths, you move as a guiding course around the sacrifice to make the will perfectly effective.
Mantra 7
त्वामिदस्या उषसो व्युष्टिषु दूतं कृण्वाना अयजन्त मानुषाः । त्वां देवा महयाय्याय वावृधुराज्यमग्ने निमृजन्तो अध्वरे ॥
Indeed you, in the dawns of this world, men have worshipped, making you their messenger. You the gods increased for a great forward movement, O Agni, anointing you with ghee in the unbroken rite.
Mantra 8
नि त्वा वसिष्ठा अह्वन्त वाजिनं गृणन्तो अग्ने विदथेषु वेधसः । रायस्पोषं यजमानेषु धारय यूयं पात स्वस्तिभिः सदा नः ॥
The Vasiṣṭhas have called you down, O winner of plenitude, praising you, O Agni, in the gatherings as seers. Hold the increase of rayi among the sacrificers; and you—guard us always with the powers of well-being.
It praises Agni as the household fire and sacrificial priest who carries offerings to the gods and brings back prosperity, strength, and protection for the worshippers.
Because Agni is ritually welcomed into the home as the sacred fire; once kindled, he presides over the household rite like an honored guest and guardian of the family’s welfare.
It asks Agni to maintain growth of wealth among the sacrificers and to guard them continually with svasti—steady well-being and safety.
