Indra (with Soma as offering-power)

This hymn is an urgent invocation to Indra to drink Soma and rise into his fullest victorious power, so he may shatter obstructing forces (Vṛtra-like resistance) and protect the worshippers’ prosperity. It blends martial imagery—cutting down hostile, sorcerous powers—with a ritual-poetic act: the seer’s speech is launched like a boat, carrying praise to the gods for wealth, opening, and safe passage.

Mantra 1

पिबा सोमं महत इन्द्रियाय पिबा वृत्राय हन्तवे शविष्ठ । पिब राये शवसे हूयमानः पिब मध्वस्तृपदिन्द्रा वृषस्व ॥

Drink the Soma for the great power of the Indra-force; drink for the slaying of Vṛtra, O most vehement. Drink for the plenitude (rāyī) and for the strength when you are called; drink of the honey—be satisfied, O Indra, and grow in your victorious might within us.

Mantra 2

अस्य पिब क्षुमतः प्रस्थितस्येन्द्र सोमस्य वरमा सुतस्य । स्वस्तिदा मनसा मादयस्वार्वाचीनो रेवते सौभगाय ॥

Drink of this Soma, rich in sap and set forth, O Indra—drink the best portion of the pressed delight. O giver of well-being, with your mind enter the rapture, turning inward toward us for a luminous abundance and a happy fortune of the soul.

Mantra 3

ममत्तु त्वा दिव्यः सोम इन्द्र ममत्तु यः सूयते पार्थिवेषु । ममत्तु येन वरिवश्चकर्थ ममत्तु येन निरिणासि शत्रून् ॥

May the heavenly Soma intoxicate you, O Indra; may that Soma intoxicate you which is pressed among the earthly realms. May that intoxicate you by which you made wide room for us; may that intoxicate you by which you drive out the enemy-forces.

Mantra 4

आ द्विबर्हा अमिनो यात्विन्द्रो वृषा हरिभ्यां परिषिक्तमन्धः । गव्या सुतस्य प्रभृतस्य मध्वः सत्रा खेदामरुशहा वृषस्व ॥

Let Indra, the bull of double greatness, come—unyielding—with his two tawny steeds, to the Soma-joy poured out all around. With the cow-born sweetness of the pressed and offered delight, grow in strength, O slayer of the ruddy (powers of disorder), and overcome all weariness at once.

Mantra 5

नि तिग्मानि भ्राशयन्भ्राश्यान्यव स्थिरा तनुहि यातुजूनाम् । उग्राय ते सहो बलं ददामि प्रतीत्या शत्रून्विगदेषु वृश्च ॥

Casting down the sharp weapons and the flashing powers, lay low the firm-set strengths of the sorcerous attackers. To you, the fierce one, I give force and might; advancing against them, cut down the enemy powers in their knots and entanglements.

Mantra 7

इदं हविर्मघवन्तुभ्यं रातं प्रति सम्राळहृणानो गृभाय । तुभ्यं सुतो मघवन्तुभ्यं पक्वोऽद्धीन्द्र पिब च प्रस्थितस्य ॥

This oblation, O Maghavan, is given to you—receive it, O king, without refusal, take it in your grasp. For you the Soma is pressed, O Maghavan; for you it is ripened—eat, O Indra, and drink also of what is set forth, so the embodied offering may become a power of your victory in us.

Mantra 8

अद्धीदिन्द्र प्रस्थितेमा हवींषि चनो दधिष्व पचतोत सोमम् । प्रयस्वन्तः प्रति हर्यामसि त्वा सत्याः सन्तु यजमानस्य कामाः ॥

O Indra, eat indeed these offerings that are set forth; accept also the Soma that is being prepared and ripened. With our forward-pressing energies we call you and draw you near in delight; may the willings of the sacrificer become true—may his inward aspirations be fulfilled in the truth.

Mantra 9

प्रेन्द्राग्निभ्यां सुवचस्यामियर्मि सिन्धाविव प्रेरयं नावमर्कैः । अया इव परि चरन्ति देवा ये अस्मभ्यं धनदा उद्भिदश्च ॥

To Indra and Agni I set my speech in a clear and fortunate movement; with my hymns I launch it like a boat upon the river. The gods who move around us like guiding currents—those who give the riches and break open the closed places—may they act for our becoming.
