RV 1.5 is an invitation to Indra to come, take his seat in the sacrifice, and drink the freshly pressed Soma while the companions raise the stoma (hymn of praise). It celebrates Indra’s immediate, full-grown might—born for Soma and for supremacy—and ends with a protective prayer that hostile mortal forces not harm the worshippers, while Indra drives away the blow of destruction.

Mantras

Mantra 1

Come then—sit down here; sing forth toward Indra. O companions who bear the hymn, bring forward the force of the chant so the Power may take his seat within us.

Mantra 2

Indra—most abundant among the many, the sovereign master of the choicest plenitudes—we call to be with us in the Soma that is pressed, companioning our offering and our aspiration.

May he indeed become for us the yoking-force in the union (of our consciousness); may he be for our spiritual plenitude (rāyí) and for the fullness of right-intelligence (puraṃdhi). May he come to us with the vājās—powers of accomplished force and victorious increase.

Mantra 4

Sing to that Indra in whose firm station the hostile powers, even in the clash of inner battles, cannot seize or check the two mighty steeds—those twin energies of luminous force that carry the soul’s will forward.

Mantra 5

O Purifier of the pressed delight, these pressed Soma-forces, bright and clear, move forward for thy accepting enjoyment; the Soma-streams come mixed with curd as a nourishing essence for the inner offering.

Mantra 6

Thou for the drinking of the pressed Soma wert born at once in thy full-grown power, O Indra, for the attainment of the highest mastery, O thou of luminous will.

Mantra 7

May the swift Soma-energies enter into you, O Indra, Lord who answers to the hymns; may they become for you a force of peace and right well-being for the awakened intelligence.

Mantra 8

O Indra, of a hundred powers of effective action, our hymns of affirmation have increased thee; the inspired utterances have increased thee. May our manifold words of truth further build thee up within us.

Mantra 9

Indra, whose protecting force is un-decaying, may win for us this plenitude of power—rich with a thousand energies—in which all manly strengths (powers of the soul’s virility) are gathered.

Let not the mortal impulses assail our embodied being with hostility. O Indra, Lord of the hymns, in thy mastery drive far away the stroke of destruction.
