Madhucchandas Vaiśvāmitra
Agni (invoked as the integral, well-formed power of the sacrifice and inner will)
Gāyatrī
This Gāyatrī hymn invokes the divine power that makes the sacrifice effective—Agni as the well-shaped, unbroken force of offering and aspiration—called day after day for protection and increase. It also turns toward Indra as the securing Peace and mighty helper of the Soma-presser, asking for good repute, plenitude, and safe passage beyond obstacles. Together, the hymn frames the early Vedic ritual as an inner-and-outer act: kindling will (Agni) and receiving victorious protection (Indra).
Mantra 1
सुरूपकृत्नुमूतये सुदुघामिव गोदुहे । जुहूमसि द्यविद्यवि ॥
For our fostering and protection we invoke (Agni), the perfectly-formed and unbroken Power, as one invokes a richly-yielding cow for the milking of the Light—day after day.
Mantra 2
उप नः सवना गहि सोमस्य सोमपाः पिब । गोदा इद्रेवतो मदः ॥
Come near to our pressings; arrive. O Soma-drinker, drink of the Soma. For the ecstasy that gives the Rays (the illumined herds) is indeed the rapture of the opulent plenitude.
Mantra 3
अथा ते अन्तमानां विद्याम सुमतीनाम् । मा नो अति ख्य आ गहि ॥
Then may we come to know of those your inmost gracious inspirations; do not pass beyond us in your seeing—come here to us.
Mantra 4
परेहि विग्रमस्तृतमिन्द्रं पृच्छा विपश्चितम् । यस्ते सखिभ्य आ वरम् ॥
Move beyond and go forth; seek out Indra, the unshaken stride of power, the luminous knower. He is the one who brings to your comrades the choicest boon—an opening of plenitude for the soul’s advance.
Mantra 5
उत ब्रुवन्तु नो निदो निरन्यतश्चिदारत । दधाना इन्द्र इद्दुवः ॥
And may the voices of obstruction that speak against us be driven away even from every other side, while we place our offering of service wholly in Indra—so that his Force may stand with us.
Mantra 6
उत नः सुभगाँ अरिर्वोचेयुर्दस्म कृष्टयः । स्यामेदिन्द्रस्य शर्मणि ॥
And may the peoples speak of us as bearers of the luminous good-fortune, O Wonder-worker; may we indeed abide in the protecting peace of Indra.
Mantra 7
एमाशुमाशवे भर यज्ञश्रियं नृमादनम् । पतयन्मन्दयत्सखम् ॥
Bring here for this swift one the swift delight— the splendour of the sacrifice that gladdens the human being; (bring) the soaring power that rejoices with its companion, so that the inner offering becomes luminous and victorious.
Mantra 8
अस्य पीत्वा शतक्रतो घनो वृत्राणामभवः । प्रावो वाजेषु वाजिनम् ॥
Having drunk of this (Soma-delight), O Shatakratu, you became the smiter of the obstructers; and you brought forward the possessor of plenitudes in the fields of the vāja—those victorious intensities of power.
Mantra 9
तं त्वा वाजेषु वाजिनं वाजयामः शतक्रतो । धनानामिन्द्र सातये ॥
Thee, O Indra of a hundred powers of action, the bearer of plenitude in all our strivings—we would make victorious, so that the riches (the inner treasures of being) may be won.
Mantra 10
यो रायोऽवनिर्महान्त्सुपारः सुन्वतः सखा । तस्मा इन्द्राय गायत ॥
Sing to Indra—he who is the great helper and protector of the soul’s plenitudes, the sure ferryman across, the comrade of the one who presses the Soma: the Power that befriends our consecrated effort and carries our being beyond the crossing.
It asks for protection and increase by invoking Agni as the steady, well-formed power that makes the sacrifice work, and it seeks Indra’s sheltering peace and help for success and safe progress.
The hymn praises Agni as an integrated, consistent force—both the ritual fire and the inner will—that does not fail in carrying the offering and sustaining the effort day after day.
Early Mandala 1 hymns often move fluidly between closely linked divine powers in the ritual. Here, Agni establishes the rite, and Indra is praised as the protector and helper who grants peace (śarman) and abundance to the Soma-presser.
