This hymn praises Bṛhaspati as the unwearied “bull” of inspired speech whose luminous songs are heard by gods and by mortals seeking renewal. It asks that true wealth—heroic strength, right guidance, and fruitful abundance—be granted only to the worthy, not to those who approach the divine merely for pleasant gain. The sukta thus links praise (stuti) with inner fitness (adhikāra) and the right use of sacred speech.

Mantra 1

अनर्वाणं वृषभं मन्द्रजिह्वं बृहस्पतिं वर्धया नव्यमर्कैः । गाथान्यः सुरुचो यस्य देवा आशृण्वन्ति नवमानस्य मर्ताः ॥

Increase by new hymns Brihaspati—the unwearied bull with the rapturous tongue—he whose bright songs the gods listen to, and the mortals who seek renewal. May this power of inspired speech grow in us into luminous right-guidance.

Mantra 2

तमृत्विया उप वाचः सचन्ते सर्गो न यो देवयतामसर्जि । बृहस्पतिः स ह्यञ्जो वरांसि विभ्वाभवत्समृते मातरिश्वा ॥

To him the season-wise utterances draw near—like a welling forth that he releases for those who seek the Divine. For Br̥haspati, becoming all-pervading, sets the choicest plenitudes straight in the truth of Ṛta; and Mātariśvan gathers them into a single harmony.

Mantra 3

उपस्तुतिं नमस उद्यतिं च श्लोकं यंसत्सवितेव प्र बाहू । अस्य क्रत्वाहन्यो यो अस्ति मृगो न भीमो अरक्षसस्तुविष्मान् ॥

He extends upward the praise and the bowing, and he stretches forth the hymn like Savitṛ spreading his arms. By his will he is the unconquerable day-force—like a dread beast to the hostile darkness—mighty, and without need of any guarding.

Mantra 4

अस्य श्लोको दिवीयते पृथिव्यामत्यो न यंसद्यक्षभृद्विचेताः । मृगाणां न हेतयो यन्ति चेमा बृहस्पतेरहिमायाँ अभि द्यून् ॥

This hymn moves in heaven and on earth; the discerning bearer of power drives it like a swift steed. These his thrusts go forth like the darts of wild creatures, against the serpent’s deceptions—against the days that are clouded by that crooked magic.

Mantra 5

ये त्वा देवोस्रिकं मन्यमानाः पापा भद्रमुपजीवन्ति पज्राः । न दूढ्ये अनु ददासि वामं बृहस्पते चयस इत्पियारुम् ॥

Those who, O god, take you for a mere giver of pleasant gain—crooked in their being—live by the good only as a borrowed thing. You do not grant your dear riches to the dull and burdened mind; Br̥haspati, you gather the sweetness only for the one who is fit to hold it.

Mantra 6

सुप्रैतुः सूयवसो न पन्था दुर्नियन्तुः परिप्रीतो न मित्रः । अनर्वाणो अभि ये चक्षते नोऽपीवृता अपोर्णुवन्तो अस्थुः ॥

May our path go well—like a track rich in good pasture; may the hard controller become friendly, like Mitra fully pleased. And those who look upon us with no right impulse—closed in themselves—may they stand apart, unveiling and departing from our way.

Mantra 7

सं यं स्तुभोऽवनयो न यन्ति समुद्रं न स्रवतो रोधचक्राः । स विद्वाँ उभयं चष्टे अन्तर्बृहस्पतिस्तर आपश्च गृध्रः ॥

Whom the praises and downward currents join together, as streams with their banks move toward the ocean—he, the knower, sees both within: Br̥haspati, the overcomer, and the waters, the eager seeker-force.

Mantra 8

एवा महस्तुविजातस्तुविष्मान्बृहस्पतिर्वृषभो धायि देवः । स नः स्तुतो वीरवद्धातु गोमद्विद्यामेषं वृजनं जीरदानुम् ॥

Thus, from the Great, widely born and mighty, Br̥haspati the bull has been set as a god. May he, when praised, give us heroic fullness and luminous riches; may we win the seeking-impulse and the battle-host, and the swift-giving abundance.
