
Sukta 1.139
Agni; Indra-Vāyu; collective Devas
This hymn opens the sacrifice by first establishing Agni in the mind and altar, then inviting Indra-Vāyu and finally the collective host of the gods to draw near through inspired speech (dhīti). It is a liturgical “bringing-near” (āvāhana) sequence: Soma is pressed for Indra, praises are offered, and the All-Gods—especially the three elevens (33)—are asked to accept and delight in the yajña.
Mantra 1
अस्तु श्रौषट् पुरो अग्निं धिया दध आ नु तच्छर्धो दिव्यं वृणीमह इन्द्रवायू वृणीमहे । यद्ध क्राणा विवस्वति नाभा संदायि नव्यसी । अध प्र सू न उप यन्तु धीतयो देवाँ अच्छा न धीतयः ॥
Let it be; let the call be heard. First, I place Agni in the thought. Then we choose that divine host; we choose Indra and Vāyu. When the new inspiration is joined at the navel of Vivāsvat, then may our thought-formations go forward and approach the gods—yes, may our thought-formations approach.
Mantra 2
यद्ध त्यन्मित्रावरुणावृतादध्याददाथे अनृतं स्वेन मन्युना दक्षस्य स्वेन मन्युना । युवोरित्थाधि सद्मस्वपश्याम हिरण्ययम् । धीभिश्चन मनसा स्वेभिरक्षभिः सोमस्य स्वेभिरक्षभिः ॥
When, O Mitra and Varuṇa, from the Truth you took up and set aside the untruth by your own ardour—by the ardour of Dakṣa—then in your dwelling we beheld the golden (radiance), with our insights and with the mind, with our own seeing-powers, with Soma’s own seeing-powers.
Mantra 3
युवां स्तोमेभिर्देवयन्तो अश्विनाश्रावयन्त इव श्लोकमायवो युवां हव्याभ्यायवः । युवोर्विश्वा अधि श्रियः पृक्षश्च विश्ववेदसा । प्रुषायन्ते वां पवयो हिरण्यये रथे दस्रा हिरण्यये ॥
Seeking the divine, with hymns the Āyus call you, O Aśvins, as if making the luminous word resound; the Āyus press forward to you with the offerings. Upon you are set all splendors and nourishments, O all-knowing ones. Your felly-rims flash on the golden chariot, O wondrous ones, on the golden chariot.
Mantra 4
अचेति दस्रा व्यु नाकमृण्वथो युञ्जते वां रथयुजो दिविष्टिष्वध्वस्मानो दिविष्टिषु । अधि वां स्थाम वन्धुरे रथे दस्रा हिरण्यये । पथेव यन्तावनुशासता रजोऽञ्जसा शासता रजः ॥
Awake, O wondrous ones; you open out the heaven. The path-makers in the battles yoke your chariot; the path-makers in the battles. Upon the seat you take your stance, on the golden chariot, O wondrous ones. Like travellers on a path you guide the spaces; straight you guide the spaces.
Mantra 5
शचीभिर्नः शचीवसू दिवा नक्तं दशस्यतम् । मा वां रातिरुप दसत्कदा चनास्मद्रातिः कदा चन ॥
By your powers of effective action, O possessors of power, serve us by day and by night. Let not your giving fail to reach us at any time; may our share of your giving never fail at any time.
Mantra 6
वृषन्निन्द्र वृषपाणास इन्दव इमे सुता अद्रिषुतास उद्भिदस्तुभ्यं सुतास उद्भिदः । ते त्वा मन्दन्तु दावने महे चित्राय राधसे । गीर्भिर्गिर्वाहः स्तवमान आ गहि सुमृळीको न आ गहि ॥
O Bull Indra, these Soma drops, bull-strong in their draught, pressed by the stone, breaking open the heights, are pressed for you, breaking open the heights. Let them gladden you for the giving, for the great and manifold plenitude. With our words of inspiration, O bearer of song, praised, come; gracious and full of goodwill, come to us.
Mantra 7
ओ षू णो अग्ने शृणुहि त्वमीळितो देवेभ्यो ब्रवसि यज्ञियेभ्यो राजभ्यो यज्ञियेभ्यः । यद्ध त्यामङ्गिरोभ्यो धेनुं देवा अदत्तन । वि तां दुह्रे अर्यमा कर्तरी सचाँ एष तां वेद मे सचा ॥
O yes, Agni, hear us—you who are invoked, you speak for the gods, for the kings worthy of sacrifice. When the gods gave that Cow to the Angirases, then Aryaman milks her out in the work, in close companionship. This one knows her, with me in companionship.
Mantra 8
मो षु वो अस्मदभि तानि पौंस्या सना भूवन्द्युम्नानि मोत जारिषुरस्मत्पुरोत जारिषुः । यद्वश्चित्रं युगेयुगे नव्यं घोषादमर्त्यम् । अस्मासु तन्मरुतो यच्च दुष्टरं दिधृता यच्च दुष्टरम् ॥
May not those manly powers and ancient splendors turn away from us; may they not perish for us now or ever before. Whatever is your marvelous and ever-new immortal acclaim from age to age—O Maruts, place that in us; and whatever is hard to cross, place that too in us (as a mastered passage).
Mantra 9
दध्यङ्ह मे जनुषं पूर्वो अङ्गिराः प्रियमेधः कण्वो अत्रिर्मनुर्विदुस्ते मे पूर्वे मनुर्विदुः । तेषां देवेष्वायतिरस्माकं तेषु नाभयः । तेषां पदेन मह्या नमे गिरेन्द्राग्नी आ नमे गिरा ॥
Dadhyañc, the ancient Aṅgiras, Priyamedha, Kaṇva, Atri, and Manu have known my birth and formation; the forefathers have known it. Their reaching out is toward the Gods; in them is our central connection and navel of continuity. By their track, by that vast step, I bow with my word; to Indra and Agni I bow with my utterance.
Mantra 10
होता यक्षद्वनिनो वन्त वार्यं बृहस्पतिर्यजति वेन उक्षभिः पुरुवारेभिरुक्षभिः । जगृभ्मा दूरआदिशं श्लोकमद्रेरध त्मना । अधारयदररिन्दानि सुक्रतुः पुरू सद्मानि सुक्रतुः ॥
Let the invoking priest bring to manifestation the desired plenitude; Bṛhaspati performs the offering, the seeker-impulse (Vena) with its strong powers, with many doors of increase. He grasped from afar the proclaiming word of the Stone, then by his own self he upheld the unbroken forces; the wise-willed established many firm seats of being.
Mantra 11
ये देवासो दिव्येकादश स्थ पृथिव्यामध्येकादश स्थ । अप्सुक्षितो महिनैकादश स्थ ते देवासो यज्ञमिमं जुषध्वम् ॥
O Gods, you who are eleven in the heaven, eleven upon the earth, and eleven who dwell in the waters by your greatness—accept and take delight in this sacrifice within us.
Agni is the sacrificial fire and messenger; invoking him first establishes the channel through which offerings and prayers reach the other gods.
Indra and Vāyu are invited as a pair to come swiftly to the Soma offering—power (Indra) and life-breath/impulse (Vāyu) acting together to energize the rite and grant boons.
It is a Vedic way of naming the total divine assembly as 33 gods (3×11), present across the three cosmic regions, asked here to accept and enjoy the sacrifice.
