RV 1.135 is an invitatory Soma hymn calling Vāyu—often in the paired presence of Indra-Vāyu—to arrive swiftly to the well-spread barhis and drink the first Soma. It celebrates the bright, fast-flowing Soma streams, their passage through the woolen filter, and Vāyu’s irresistible, sun-ray-like powers that cannot be held back. Mantra 1

स्तीर्णं बर्हिरुप नो याहि वीतये सहस्रेण नियुता नियुत्वते शतिनीभिर्नियुत्वते । तुभ्यं हि पूर्वपीतये देवा देवाय येमिरे । प्र ते सुतासो मधुमन्तो अस्थिरन्मदाय क्रत्वे अस्थिरन् ॥

The sacred seat is spread; come near to us for the feast of awakening, O Vāyu, yoked with your thousand harnessed powers, with your hundreds of swift yokes. For you, who drink first, the gods have made ready the offering for the God. For you the honeyed Soma-pressings have been set forth—set forth for ecstasy and for the power of conscious will.

Mantra 2

तुभ्यायं सोमः परिपूतो अद्रिभिः स्पार्हा वसानः परि कोशमर्षति शुक्रा वसानो अर्षति । तवायं भाग आयुषु सोमो देवेषु हूयते । वह वायो नियुतो याह्यस्मयुर्जुषाणो याह्यस्मयुः ॥

For you this Soma is purified by the pressing-stones; desirable, it flows clothed in brightness around the vessel—it streams in shining form. This is your portion among the life-powers; this Soma is invoked among the gods. Bring your yoked energies, O Vāyu; come to the one who seeks you, taking delight in us—come to the seeker in us.

Mantra 4

आ वां रथो नियुत्वान्वक्षदवसेऽभि प्रयांसि सुधितानि वीतये वायो हव्यानि वीतये । पिबतं मध्वो अन्धसः पूर्वपेयं हि वां हितम् । वायवा चन्द्रेण राधसा गतमिन्द्रश्च राधसा गतम् ॥

May your chariot with its yoked powers bear you here for our help, to the well-set offerings for the feast—O Vāyu, to the oblations for the feast. Drink both of you the honeyed pressed essence; for you two the first draught is appointed. O Vāyu, come with luminous plenitude; and Indra too, come with that plenitude.

आ वां धियो ववृत्युरध्वराँ उपेममिन्दुं मर्मृजन्त वाजिनमाशुमत्यं न वाजिनम् । तेषां पिबतमस्मयू आ नो गन्तमिहोत्या । इन्द्रवायू सुतानामद्रिभिर्युवं मदाय वाजदा युवम् ॥

Our thoughts have turned toward you to the sacrifice; they cleanse this Soma-drop, swift and forceful like a racing steed. Drink of these, O seekers of us; come to us here with your aid. O Indra and Vāyu, from the pressed Soma by the stones—may you two come for ecstasy, you two who give the plenitude of force.

Mantra 6

इमे वां सोमा अप्स्वा सुता इहाध्वर्युभिर्भरमाणा अयंसत वायो शुक्रा अयंसत । एते वामभ्यसृक्षत तिरः पवित्रमाशवः । युवायवोऽति रोमाण्यव्यया सोमासो अत्यव्यया ॥

These Soma-juices are pressed here in the waters; borne by the Adhvaryu priests they have come forward—O Vāyu, they have come bright. These swift streams have run toward you, passing beyond the filter. Young and impetuous, the Soma currents surge over the fleece—over the woollen strainer they surge.

Mantra 7

अति वायो ससतो याहि शश्वतो यत्र ग्रावा वदति तत्र गच्छतं गृहमिन्द्रश्च गच्छतम् । वि सूनृता ददृशे रीयते घृतमा पूर्णया नियुता याथो अध्वरमिन्द्रश्च याथो अध्वरम् ॥

O Vāyu, pass beyond the ever-moving, come from the everlasting; where the pressing-stone speaks, go there—go to the home, and Indra too go. The luminous right-word becomes visible; the ghee of clarity streams forth. With the full yoking of your powers go to the sacrifice—go to the sacrifice, and Indra too.

Mantra 8

अत्राह तद्वहेथे मध्व आहुतिं यमश्वत्थमुपतिष्ठन्त जायवोऽस्मे ते सन्तु जायवः । साकं गावः सुवते पच्यते यवो न ते वाय उप दस्यन्ति धेनवो नाप दस्यन्ति धेनवः ॥

Here indeed you two bear that honey-offering—where the companions gather around the aśvattha; may those companions be with us. Together the rays of Light are brought to birth; the grain of force is ripened. For you, O Vāyu, the fostering powers do not fail; the nourishing streams do not withdraw.

इमे ये ते सु वायो बाह्वोजसोऽन्तर्नदी ते पतयन्त्युक्षणो महि व्राधन्त उक्षणः । धन्वञ्चिद्ये अनाशवो जीराश्चिदगिरौकसः । सूर्यस्येव रश्मयो दुर्नियन्तवो हस्तयोर्दुर्नियन्तवः ॥

These, O Vāyu, are your strong-armed powers; within the river they fly—bull-like energies that greatly increase. Even across the barren they do not lose speed; even on the heights they do not grow weary. Like the Sun’s rays they are hard to restrain, hard to hold back in the hands.
