Mantra 1
सुरूपकृत्नुमूतये सुदुघामिव गोदुहे ।जुहूमसि द्यविद्यवि
Him, fair-fashioned, for our aid—like a good-milking cow to the cow-milker—do we invoke, day after day.
Mantra 2
उप नः सवना गहि सोमस्य सोमपाः पिब । गोदा इद् रेवतो मदः
Come hither to our Soma-pressings; drink of Soma, O Soma-drinker. Verily the exhilaration is that of the wealthy—thou art the giver of cows.
Mantra 3
अथा ते अन्तमानां विद्याम सुमतीनाम्। मा नो अति ख्य आ गहि
Then may we know of thy most intimate benevolences, of thy gracious favours. Do not pass us by, as one unseen: come hither unto us.
Mantra 4
शुष्मिन्तमं न ऊतये द्युम्निनं पाहि जागृविम्। इन्द्र सोमं शतक्रतो
Most mighty in thy force, most glorious, wakeful Guardian—keep us safe for succour. O Indra, O Soma, thou of hundred powers!
Mantra 5
इन्द्रियाणि शतक्रतो या ते जनेषु पञ्चसु । इन्द्र तानि त आ वृणे
Those Indra-powers of thine, O Hundred-powered, that are among the fivefold peoples—O Indra, those very powers I choose and claim as mine.
Mantra 6
अगन्निन्द्र श्रवो बृहद् द्युम्नं दधिष्व दुष्टरम्। उत् ते शुष्मं तिरामसि
Great fame hath come, O Indra: set upon thee splendour hard to vanquish. Upward we pass beyond—by thy fierce might we overgo our foes.
Mantra 7
अर्वावतो न आ गह्यथो शक्र परावतः । उ लोको यस्ते अद्रिव इन्द्रेह तत आ गहि
From near unto us come hither; yea, O Śakra, from afar. Whatever realm is thine, O Stone-wielder Indra—hither, from thence, come thou to us.
Mantra 8
इन्द्रो अङ्ग महद् भयमभी षदप चुच्यवत्। स हि स्थिरो विचर्षणिः
Indra, in sooth, confronted mighty fear, and drave it clean away. For he is steadfast, ruling far and wide among mankind.
Mantra 9
इन्द्रश्च मृलयाति नो न नः पश्चादघं नशत्। भद्रं भवाति नः पुरः
And Indra is gracious unto us: let not evil overtake us from behind. Let auspicious good be ours in front.
Mantra 10
इन्द्र आशाभ्यस्परि सर्वाभ्यो अभयं करत्। जेता शत्रून् विचर्षणिः
Indra, from every quarter round about, hath made for us security—he, the wide-ruling conqueror of our foes.
Mantra 11
क ईं वेद सुते सचा पिबन्तं कद् वयो दधे । अयं यः पुरो विभिनत्त्योजसा मन्दानः शिप्र्यन्धसः
Who verily knows him, drinking with the pressed (Soma), what vital force he hath assumed? This is he who, by might, cleaves the strongholds—exulting, O Śiprī, with the Soma-draught.
Mantra 12
दाना मृगो न वारणः पुरुत्रा चरथं दधे । नकिष्ट्वा नि यमदा सुते गमो महांश्चरस्योजसा
Bounteous, like a wild beast, like an elephant, he hath taken his ranging course in many a place. None may hold thee back in thy advance at the pressed (Soma): great thou roamest, by thy might.
Mantra 13
य उग्रः सन्ननिष्टृत स्थिरो रणाय संस्कृतः । यदि स्तोतुर्मघवा शृणवद्धवं नेन्द्रो योषत्या गमत्
He who, fierce, unrepulsed, steadfast, is made ready for the battle—if the bounteous one shall hear the singer’s call, then may Indra come with willing favor.
Mantra 14
वयं घ त्वा सुतावन्त आपो न वृक्तबर्हिषः । पवित्रस्य प्रस्रवणेषु वृत्रहन् परि स्तोतार आसते
We verily, furnished with the pressed Soma, like waters—having strewn the sacred grass—at the outflowings of the strainer, O Vṛtra-slayer, the praisers sit around thee.
Mantra 15
स्वरन्ति त्वा सुते नरो वसो निरेक उक्थिनः । कदा सुतं तृषाण ओक आ गम इन्द्र स्वब्दीव वंसगः
At the pressed Soma the men sing thee aloud, O Wealth-lord, at the outpouring—the hymn-chanters. When, thirsting for the pressed draught, wilt thou come homeward, O Indra, sweet-drinking, eager to enjoy?
Mantra 16
कण्वेभिर्धृष्णवा धृषद् वाजं दर्षि सहस्रिणम्। पिशङ्गरूपं मघवन् विचर्षणे मक्षू गोमन्तमीमहे
With the Kaṇvas, O bold one, thou grantest boldly the prize, thousandfold. The tawny-formed, O bounteous, far-seeing one—quickly we implore thee for cattle-rich gain.
It is used to invoke Indra for strong protection against misfortune and hostile forces while also drawing prosperity—victory, success, and especially cattle-rich gain.
It is a protective framing for one’s life-path: unseen or past-linked harms are pushed away (‘behind’), while the future course is blessed and made favorable (‘in front’).
No specific substances are required by the cited verses; the hymn functions effectively as a recitation-based invocation. Optional simple, tradition-approved offerings may be added, but they are not mandatory.
