Sukta 9.51
त्वं हि सोम वर्धयन्त्सुतो मदाय भूर्णये । वृषन्त्स्तोतारमूतये ॥
tváṃ hí soma vardháyan sutó mádāya bhū́rṇaye | vṛ́ṣan stotā́ram ūtáye ||
Denn du, o Soma, wenn gepresst, wächst in deinem Ausströmen zur Ekstase; o mächtiger Stier, du mehrst den Sänger zu seinem Schutz und Beistand.
O Soma, when pressed thou growest, pouring out for ecstasy (madāya bhūrṇaye); O Bull, thou increasest the singer for help and protection.
When the Ananda is actively expressed (sutaḥ), it amplifies itself—delight begets delight—and becomes an upsurging movement (bhūrṇi) that supports spiritual intoxication (mada) meaning luminous ecstasy, not tamasic excitement. This power strengthens the stotṛ (the soul’s voice of aspiration and affirmation), giving protection (ūti) against depression, doubt, and hostile movements.
True joy is self-multiplying when consciously cultivated, and it fortifies the aspirant’s voice and endurance; delight is a safeguard as well as a rapture.
Soma-ritual, Ecstasy, Increase, Divine aid
Pavamāna hymns often function as experiential reports of Soma’s growth through purification; the seer speaks as practitioner of the inner pressing.
Emphasizes a practical law of sādhanā: expressed Ananda increases and becomes protective strength for the aspirant’s speech and will.
Nourisher and increaser of divine powers; giver of ecstasy and protection to the sacrificer.
Ecstatic force that stabilizes and guards the aspirant; transforms emotion into luminous rapture.
Soma pressing and praise during filtration/offerings

4 × ~8; strong caesura around ‘suto madāya’.
Pulsing, growth-oriented cadence; supportive and affirmative.
Builds confidence and inner warmth; a sense of swelling energy held in clarity.
Soma pressing/filtration praise used to intensify Soma’s ‘mada’ for the gods and empower the sacrificer-priest (stotṛ)
During the flow of Soma and accompanying stotras
Pressing, filtering, praising; seeking protection and strength for the officiant/singer
For practitioners facing discouragement: chant to restore joy and strengthen the ‘inner voice’ of aspiration.
from √vṛdh ‘to grow, increase’ → expansion of power. (suta) from √su ‘to press out, extract’ → expressed essence through tapas/effort. (mada) from √mad ‘to be glad, intoxicated’ → ecstasy, rapture. (bhūrṇi) related to √bhur/√bhram ‘to move/whirl’ → surging abundance. (vṛṣan) from √vṛṣ ‘to rain, to be virile’ → generative force. (ūti) ‘help’ from √av/√ūt (protect/aid; Vedic formation) → guarding assistance.
Tapas/effort as ‘pressing’ that expresses delight, Ananda as transformative ecstasy (mada), Divine protection (ūti) as inner guidance
Protection (ūti) implies alignment with ṛta—right movement guarded by delight.
Ecstasy here is not disorder but luminous intensification supporting truth-speaking.
Self-increase of the divine essence in manifestation: delight becoming force.
Integral yoga: Ananda as power that protects and transforms nature.
A surging wave of purified joy that strengthens the aspirant’s speech and shields the psyche.
Cultivate a ‘luminous ecstasy’ that strengthens aspiration rather than dispersing it.
Anāhata (joy) supporting Viśuddha (mantric voice)
Gentle bhastrikā-like emphasis is not advised; instead use steady ujjāyī-light breathing to ‘grow’ the inner Soma without agitation.
Expansive, buoyant, protected.
Chant 9 times, then speak one inner affirmation (saṅkalpa) from the heart; feel Soma as a warm, protective mantle around the chest and throat.
Tri-svara framework; exact udatta placements require svara text.
Do not over-emphasize ‘madāya’ as excitement; keep tone luminous and controlled; sustain ‘vṛṣan’ with firmness.
tvaṃ: nasalized m lightly, vardhayan: dh aspirated; avoid ‘vardayan’, bhūrṇaye: retroflex ṇ; long ū, stotāram: long ā; retroflex ṭ in some recensions not present—keep dental t, ūtaye: long ū
Warm, resonant, steady (protective rather than sharp)
