Outer meaning

(He grants) good chariots to Ātithigva, and good reins to the son of Ṛkṣa, for the Aśvamedha—beautifully formed.

Inner meaning

Indra’s gift becomes more ‘organized’: not only horses (raw energy) but ‘su-ratha’ (a well-built vehicle) and ‘su-abhīśū’ (well-reined control). Psychologically, progress requires both power and governance—life-energy must be harnessed by a higher direction. ‘supeśasaḥ’ indicates energies shaped into harmonious form—refined capacities rather than crude impulses. In the inner aśvamedha, the vital is offered and simultaneously perfected into a divine instrument.

Universal truth

Spiritual force must be structured and governed; freedom is not lack of reins but right mastery that makes the instrument beautiful and effective.

Themes

vehicle-of-force, inner-discipline, Ashvamedha, Indraic-empowerment

Other hymns
Rig Veda 8.68.15-17 (sequence of gifts: horses → chariots/reins → six horses and lasting gain)

Significance

The seer emphasizes the yogic necessity of ‘reins’: illumination must bring mastery, not merely intensity—an essential Aurobindonian theme of transformation of the vital.

Devata
Indra
Epithets
Rathin (lord of the chariot), Harivāhana, Maghavan
Related deities
Agni (leader of sacrifice), Soma (delight that fuels), Maruts (storm-forces/impulses needing harnessing)

Cosmic role

Organizer of victorious movement; equips the journey with vehicle and control.

Inner power

Gives both force and self-mastery—energies yoked to a higher intention.

Where it is used

Aśvamedha/royal consecratory context; Indra praise as giver of vehicles and control.
