Sukta 8.11
त्वमग्ने व्रतपा असि देव आ मर्त्येष्वा । त्वं यज्ञेष्वीड्यः ॥
tvám agne vratapā́ asi devá ā́ mártyeṣv ā́ | tváṁ yajñéṣv ī́ḍyaḥ ||
Du, o Agni, bist der Hüter des vrata, ein Gott, der zu den Sterblichen kommt. Du bist in den Opfern zu rufen und zu verehren.
Agni is praised as the divine guardian of vratas (sacred laws/observances) who “comes” into mortals and is worthy to be invoked and adored in sacrifices.
Agni is the awakened Flame of divine Will and aspiration that enters the human being and guards the right inner working (vrata) of the yoga-sacrifice. When this Will is present, the inner offering (thought, emotion, action) becomes rightly ordered and effective; Agni becomes the one power to be continually sought (īḍyaḥ) in all acts of consecration.
Spiritual progress depends on a conscious inner Fire that protects the law of truth in our works; when the divine Will is invited into human life, ordinary action can be transmuted into a sacrifice that leads toward clarity, harmony, and realization.
Agni praise, Law-guardianship, Invocation, Inner sacrifice
The voice is that of a practicing community of seekers (vipra-impulse implied across the hymn) emphasizing Agni as the inner rule-holder (vratapā)—a hallmark of the Aurobindo/Kashyap psychological reading where Agni is the organizer of the sādhanā and the guardian of right working.
Mediator and establisher of the sacrifice; carrier of offerings; awakener of the divine powers in the human instrument; upholder of ṛta in action.
Psychic/divine Will that kindles aspiration, purifies motives, and aligns works with truth.
Agni-invocation at the opening of an iṣṭi/soma-related rite; general āhavana to establish the sacrificial fire
त्वम॑ग्ने व्रत॒पा अ॑सि दे॒व आ मर्त्ये॒ष्वा । त्वं य॒ज्ञेष्वीड्य॑: ॥

tvam | agne | vrata-pāḥ | asi | devaḥ | ā | martyeṣu | ā | tvam | yajñeṣu | īḍyaḥ
Anuṣṭubh (probable; common in later/8th maṇḍala style)
32
4 pādas of ~8 syllables each (approximate)
Compact, declarative, mantra-like cadence suited for affirmation.
Stabilizes attention and strengthens resolve; feels like a clear inner injunction to invite Agni into works.
General Agni-stuti usable at kindling and invocation phases (Agnyādhāna/Agnihotra-style contexts broadly), emphasizing Agni as vrata-guardian within human performers.
At commencement or when reaffirming correct performance (vrata) of the rite
Kindling/feeding Agni; recitation to invite the deity into the human sphere and the ritual space
Use as a daily ‘consecration verse’ before work/meditation to align intention and action with truth.
: vrata- 'vow, law, ordained working' (from √ 'choose, will; restrain/cover' in semantic development) + √ 'protect' → 'protector of the law'. : gerundive from √/ 'praise, invoke' → 'worthy to be invoked'. : from √ 'to worship, sacrifice' → inner act of offering.
Ṛta/vrata (law of right action), descent of the divine into the mortal, yajña as inner discipline
Agni as vratapā embodies ṛta in works—right functioning of the inner and outer sacrifice.
The ‘deva entering mortals’ suggests descent of truth-consciousness into human nature.
Fire as first awakener/organizer: the principle that shapes chaos into ordered movement.
Proto-Vedāntic/Integral Yoga affinity (psychological interpretation of yajña as inner transformation)
dawn-to-morning (typical kindling time; symbolic of beginning)
The rising inner heat of aspiration that orders the day’s movements into a conscious offering.
Invoke the inner Fire to guard the law of right working: ‘May my thoughts, speech, and acts move in truth.’
Manipura (fire/will center)
Gentle nāsāgra awareness with a warm exhale; mentally offer each exhale into the inner flame
Collected, consecrated, action-ready quietude
Before any task, pause; inwardly ‘kindle’ aspiration, then act as yajña—without ego-claim, with vigilance for truth in motive.
Notated svara unavailable here; chant with standard Rigvedic tonal discipline: preserve udatta peaks on accented syllables, avoid flattening svarita transitions.
Emphasize: tvám | ágne | vratapā́ | ási | deváḥ | ā́ | mártyeṣu | ā́ || tvám | yajñéṣu | ī́ḍyaḥ || (approximate accenting by word prominence).
Keep ‘agne’ as two syllables: ag-ne (not ‘agni’)., Retroflex ‘ṭ/ḍ’ not present; but keep clear dental ‘t’ in tvam., Long vowels: ī in īḍyaḥ; sustain gently., ‘yajñeṣu’: pronounce ‘jñ’ as a tight cluster (yaj-ñ-ṣu).
Clear, steady, slightly bright (as if ‘kindling’).
