Dann, zur Abenddämmerung des dritten Tages, erreichte der Wagenlenker Ayodhyā und sah die Stadt aller Freude beraubt.
The charioteer reached Ayodhya on the third day at dusk and found the city cheerless.
When dharma’s course brings separation, one must still complete one’s entrusted task, even as the heart trembles.
Contemplation on how the presence of the righteous (Rāma) is felt as ānanda; supports bhakti through viraha (devotional longing).
The city’s external splendor is voided by inner sorrow—suggesting that ānanda is not in objects/structures but in the presence of dharma and the beloved.
Chāndogya’s emphasis on ānanda as deeper than worldly arrangements; absence of the righteous makes the ‘city’ feel empty.
Sāyankāla
Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa 2.57.5 (silent/empty Ayodhya); Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa 2.58 (Sumantra’s report and the king’s reaction context)
Mahābhārata: city/kingdom imagery becoming ‘śūnya’ when dharma is wounded (general topos)
Ayodhyākāṇḍa: repeated ‘Ayodhya without Rama’ lament motif across citizen speeches
Anuṣṭup (Śloka)
Solemn
Manda (slow) descent on ‘निरानन्दां’ to color the cadence with heaviness
The verse highlights the communal cost of dharma-bound decisions: Rāma’s truthful adherence to duty results in collective sorrow, showing how righteousness can demand sacrifice.
Sumantra arrives back in Ayodhyā after escorting Rāma, Sītā, and Lakṣmaṇa toward exile, and he finds the capital plunged into grief.
Truth-aligned acceptance (satya-niṣṭhā) is implied: the city’s sorrow arises because Rāma does not deviate from the truth-bound course of exile.
